1. you have to buy it online for in store pickup. Limit 12 quarts per

2. It works on 15W50 and 0W40 but I can't get it to work on 5w40

Do any manufacturers recommend 0W40, I wonder? I can't see needing to
use 0W-anything, even a good synthetic, unless you lived somewhere

M-B for the '80s gassers I'm familiar with, too (and probably others).
If you want to simplify your life, or at least the part that involves
changing oil, just buy a few gallons of Delo 400 15W40 whenever it's
on sale and use it in everything. (Except for the many late-model
cars people have mentioned that require 0Wsomething. Which I suspect,
apart from Mercedes and Porsche, is probably a cynical way by the
manufacturer to improve CAFE numbers, with the expectation that the
increased wear caused the engine by a thinner oil doesn't make a
difference until the car is long out of warranty.)

Mobil 1 contains ester. And beer contains alcohol. However beer is not mostly
alcohol, and it seems obvious that Mobil 1 has not been mostly ester in recent
years. Circa 1992, I can recall trying Syntec, which cost more than M1, and a
store brand 'synthetic blend'. While the M1 would stay at the max mark on the
dipstick for thousands of miles, the $5 Syntec and the $2 blend disappeared at a
noticeable rate.
After Quaker State fought in court and won the 'right' to lie about Syntec, it
seems obvious that everybody else sells whatever blend of group III/IV/V they
want to put in the bottle and calls it 'full synthetic'.

1. you have to buy it online for in store pickup. Limit 12 quarts per order.
2. It works on 15W50 and 0W40 but I can't get it to work on 5w40

Marshall and some others reported that OM60x engines ran noisy on 0W40 but 5W40
was OK.

Both my '04 Focus ZTW wagon and my son's 2005 Focus sedan (both with the 2.3l 4
cylinder engine ) call for 0W-20. I get a heck of a deal from the local Ford
dealer for oil changes using their house brand synthetic blend, so I just use
that. When I get a house and a garage again I may go back to M1 for both cars.
I keep records religiously, and I saw no appreciable difference in mileage
between M1 and the Motorcraft blend.

FWIW, I get an oil and filter change, tire rotation and complete inspection for
under $30 at the stealership. I can't do the work for that even if I had
access to the required facilities.

The online purchase worked for me last night. 3.99 for 12 Qt of
15W-50. As told, it shows up as $8 a qt until you check out, then
the price is 3.99/Qt. I tried the additional 20% code, and it said
the code worked, but the price was the same.

What about 20W-50? That's also good for the older diesels. Sadly
it's nearly always out of stock at all the local FLAPs, and Wal-Mart
does not stock it at all anymore. I've been using Chevron Delo, but
would like to use M1 for the winter time.

[MBZ] $3.99 Mobil One, addendum

2010-11-30 Thread glenn brown

Guys, I recently purchased an '85 300TD from my brother and this car had been
previously diagnosed with valve stem seals which need replacing as there's
considerable oil smoke after startup from cold but disappears after ~ 5 min. of
running. Since I seem to recall the honorable Dr. Booth indicating that
synthetic oils tend to swell seals more than conventional/dino oils, I thought
I'd try synthetic oil in the TD for a couple oils changes to see if this
improves things before I seriously consider trying to replace the valve stem
seals. Since I've only got a few hundred miles on the first synthetic oil
change in the TD and the offer at Advance would be just too good to pass up,
I thought I'd purchase some of the Mobil 1 5W-40 diesel truck oil ahead of time
for the next oil change but the Advance Auto Parts store employee indicated
that this oil is not on sale and I tried the purchase on the Net approach,
where someone has indicated that the discount would show up in the cart
electronically . . . Note: this does not occur.

Hi Glenn,

Your idea has merit, my '96 Dakota was leaking badly from the rear main seal,
it was losing a qt in like 500 miles and I had no job or garage or tools to
work on it (this was before I had a house) so I tried synthetic in it. After
~20,000 miles the leak had slowed to ~1qt in 3,000 miles and stayed that way
for ~100,000 more miles until I got rid of the truck. You have to be patient
though. My '78 240D leaks/consumes a fair amount, I haven't really tracked it
but I'd say 1qt in 800 miles or so but I've gone to M1 and its improving slowly.

The 5w40 doesn't qualify for the deal but the 15w50 does. While its not as
light an oil as the 5w40 and not as good for cold weather its a considerable
improvement in the cold over conventional 15w40.

Re: [MBZ] $3.99 Mobil One

2010-11-30 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
There is a discussion going on another list about this very
subject. There is no hard facts just observations. When someone
from M1 was asked if their new 15w50 was PAO/ester or group III
they avoided giving a straight answer. If it was in fact still
group IV/V that would have been a good selling point. Apparently
the reason for the question is the observation that the new
formula starts burning off much sooner than the old formula.

You all are aware that they changed M1 to where its just a
hydrocracked group 3 oil now? Not worth the price if you ask me.

I put an email in to them and asked about that very thing as

Still the 15w50 is a pretty dammed good oil and at that price
I may pick up 12 quarts...

Is there a direct link? I have the ad-click-trackers blocked, so the link on
their site goes nowhere.

http://www.advanceautoparts.com

Click on motor oil down near the right side, then limit it to Mobil products.
Full price shows up in item search, sale price shows in checkout. Fatwallet
members can get 7% cashback, and I believe Shopdiscover gets you 10% on your
Discover card, don't know if you can combine the two. Advance Auto discount
coupons normally don't work if there's any motor oil in the shopping cart. I was
able to get 40% off on a 5 gallon pail of ATF, something like $28 with tax.
Maybe I should see if the sale gets half off on M1 ATF. 60% of 50% of their
regular $9 on M1 ATF would be $2.70.
