That is what happens when the shots are called by Madison ave 
bowties.  I was telling a guy yesterday that the 126 was the last 
"real" big mercedes.  (along with the 124 and 201)


When they changed it to the letter in the front it was supposed to 
keep everything making sense, so instead of 400sel it was s420 since 
it was a 4.2l. Now it seems they are back to the numbers not always 
matching the engine in the case of my gl320, it's got a 3.0 in it, 
and this new s350 you are taking about. I wish they would have just 
left it the old way.

Yes. Oil fills cylinder and exhaust smokes terribly. No external leak. I
thought it was bad turbo and bent rod #1 before I figured it out. It's
worth a preventive head gasket change in my opinion. At least then you can
do it when you want to instead of when you have to. Newer revisions have
reinforced the known weak spot.

I'm 90% sure the replacement engines were supposed to be good by 1996.
I wonder about an original engine with a 1996 head gasket. Having the head 
milled flat again after 89000 miles and thousands of heat cycles would also tend 
to improve the reliability of the head gasket.


I also wonder if the problem is moot as long as the owner keeps watch for oil 
leaks near the front of the head and changes the head gasket promptly when 
seepage starts. Is it possible to fill the #1 cylinder with oil and not leak any 
to the outside of the engine?

shaved head, new head gasket, of course, bunch of other stuff I don't 
remember.  Nothing done to lower part of eng.  Changed T chain again at ~195 
kmi.

No, there was not. 1987 was the last year for the 3.0L in the US & the 
W140 diesels were all SWB (short wheel base).

126 350SDL rodbender
126 300SDL non-rodbender

 ?

Or was there no 300SDL after the 350SDL?

Bzzt  after the 126 350SDL (rodbender) was the 350/300SD W140 
(rodbender)   SDLs were only 126.

350SDLs (but not 300SDLs) are latent rod benders unless they've been
upgraded, either by a MBZ reman/new crate engine or the redesigned
connecting rods ... prior to ovaling out the bores.  That said, even
original motors may go many miles before symptoms appear.

Could be.  Many 350s have bent rods, but my '91 350SDL has 203 kmi, anyway; 
sure cruised mighty fine on 150-mile trip today.  Still keeping fingers 
crossed.

Aside from that, the best of the W126 sedans.
Probably a good car if it's had a new factory engine or at least a 
preventative head gasket upgrade. Price seems a bit steep though.
