Semi-auto guns have MORE parts in them to ensure that they don't fire
again when they close back up, unless the trigger is cycled again.
But if something's broken... No worse surprise than finding a semi-auto
pistol whose trigger is actually a "magazine empty" switch! Pull it once
and then hang on until the magazine is empty. Yikes. I've heard of it,
but never experienced it.

> I don't own any pistols -- my understanding is that Glocks don't have a

Indeed. The great unwashed, upon hearing that a gun (like a revolver,
or a Glock) doesn't have a safety switch immediately assumes "OH MY
GOD IT'S NOT SAFE!" No, that's not a logical conclusion.

Magical thinking, it's everywhere.

A gun without a separate can-point-to-it safety lever is no less safe
than a car without 'go-fast' stripes on it is not fast. Its safety, or speed,
is NOT INHERENTLY RELATED to these things. But rather, other things.

Glocks have something like three different mechanisms in them to ensure
that unless you pull the trigger they won't fire. Revolvers have internal
design features to ensure the same thing. But, being mere machines, they
can be broken so that they're not working as intended. Less safe than they're
supposed to be.

Any gun that fires when the trigger is not pulled is not safe. And is probably
broken.

firing other than by a deliberate trigger pull.

Um...this is the first I've heard of this. Apparently this directive was
issued in '04, and I retired in '08 after 32 years in DOJ and DHS.

>From what I see on the 'netz, the order is about consistency of
credentials; so to be able to confirm identity from looking at
credentials.

I'm not sure how this could be done by phone.

When I was "on the job" I would sometimes ask for their boss's name, then
call the publicly available number and ask to speak to that person.

One time a manager asked me to help a female Interpol agent. My spidey
senses were tingling a little, so I told her I had never seen Interpol
creds and was curious. She was a phony!

Funny that you mention cooking oil! The most recent EVOO I got from Costco
is Italian Olive Oil that has a DOP certification. The quality and flavor
is noticeably better than their previous oils. It has a distinctly
fresher, fruity, peppery flavor. I also notice that the Vinaigrette
dressing I make with it stays liquid in the fridge.

Highly recommended!

Our main Ethernet switch is Netgear. The wifi access points are Apple,
and the main router is Mikrotik. (It's been running 24/7 for just shy of
20 years, now, and is identical to the router that was on the ISP's tower
at the time of installation.) There are a couple of small D-link Ethernet
switches that fanout some A/V clusters, too.

[MBZ] ***SPAM*** RE: OT - Chain Saw Recommendations

2020-09-08 Thread Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes
Early Sunday morning my next door neighbor had someone cutting down a big tree
right next to his house. I thought it odd to start a project like that at 0800
Sunday, but I'm an early riser so no big deal. As I watched the weather report
yesterday evening, and watched the standing snags on the county property behind
my house swaying crazily in the wind, I wondered if my insurance coverage is
high enough!

I need to call my agent, as well as ask the county about those trees.

While working on the cursed Focus alternator replacement (successful,
finally) I failed to notice a nest of yellow jackets in the ground
behind my work area. This is the time of year that they seem to be
really active/aggressive around here.

One of them nailed me in the wrist on Sunday afternoon. My left forearm
now looks like Popeye the Sailor's arm (OK not quite that bad but
definitely puffy, swollen, tight skin, some clear fluid weeping in
spots, from the mid-forearm down to my knuckles. Cannot make a fist with
that hand right now due to the swelling.

I react that way to yellow jackets. Not much to do about it but wait it
out. Bee stings, other wasps don't seem to have nearly that effect.

I dispatched the nest that evening with a big load of insecticide spray,
after they had all returned for the night.

Yup. Had this in my last house. PO replaced the air handler/evaporator in 2010
and it was still an R22 system. When the compressor bit the big one in 2016, we
had to replace the air handler/evaporator because the system had to be R410a.

As far as I know the units are usually replaced at the same time.

They said they were ordering a new one from Trane. Hopefully that is
what happens. I’m still wondering if the fan quit working and it
burned up the compressor. You would think they would habe checked
that because it’s not like compressor kicks on then shuts off later
if pressure gets too high. It just does not kick on at all.

Fan goes out again less than a year later, I call the guy, he comes
out and finds a rescue motor instead of the real deal. So I tell him
we paid like $500 for this, why is it a substandard unit? He hems
and haws and tells me he can put in the right motor but he'll have to
charge me $75 for a visit. I tell him how about you do what your guy
was supposed to have done, and you charged us for, and I won't see
you in court. He got all pissy but put in the right motor. His
wife, who ran the books, called me 2-3 times wanting the $75 and I told her

Nice. That could be fun.

The youngest son and I were trying out our sporting clay club’s new rifle range
today. 100 yards long, which is nice.

I took my Yugoslavian SKS and the youngster took his new Remington 700
chambered in 300 magnum. Needless to say he has a very sore shoulder. I do not,
as the SKS was hitting steels flawlessly with minimal recoil. Gotta love those
stripper clips.

Lots of fun was had by all.

Mine is Cardinalrod Metallic, but the original owners had the whole car
repainted when they had some damage repaired, and it came out dark
nonmetallic burgundy, which was horribly checked by the time I bought it
in 1984. They refused to disclose who did the horrible paint work. By the
end of the 1980s it was starting to peel off, revealing the cardinal red
below. But by the end of the 1980s, the trunk was so rusty one of the gas
tank holding straps fell off.

I broke one, ruining a Bilstein shock in the process, got both

0.4qt doesn't sound like much, but what does the dipstick say after you
run the engine and park it for a while on the flat and level? If the
overfill is some small fraction of the distance between full and add, it
might be OK, if it's 1/2" high, definitely drain it.

On my 2014 Passat TDI I over-filled my crankcase by 0.5 quart (neighbor was

I never have over-filled anything ever In my life.
Is 0.5 qt a big deal? Essentially, I added almost 5 quarts and the capacity is

I don't recall any such problems with it. I'm using VirtualBox 6.0.20, hosting
Mac OS 10.6 (non-Server, via tricks), and 10.7,
along with linux. It is running as me, not root. The old Mac OSs don't have
SIP, and whatever VBox is doing doesn't seem to
run afoul of it on the High Sierra host OS. I am using VMware Fusion 11 for
Windows 10, and Linux. I am using Qemu for
simulating the ARM for Raspberry Pi.

This cheese grater kicks ass, so far as I am concerned. Running non-stop since
late May, and busy every day. Perhaps no
longer a speed demon, but plenty fast enough for me. My only complaint is that
in high summer, the heat it (and the big monitor)
kick out is a little unwelcome. In winter, just the opposite.

The big issue with VB and the Mac side is SIP. It creates all sorts of havoc
when it come to modifying the new disk, as SIP doesn’t want you to do it.

I toyed with the idea of running VB as root, but that’s a scary thing and could
potentially bodge up my machine.

I know this can be done, I’m just not sure how - yet.

I was chasing doing this at one time, and I thought I'd gotten it to work. It
is _not_ a trivial process.
Then again, maybe I never did get it to work and gave up. I was trying to get
Mac OS 10.6 to boot

Nothing as marvelous as the storms found in the semi and full tropics, but
enough that I flipped breakers after unplugging delicate electronics from the

Not sure what you’re describing (I know what you’re talking about as far as
partitions.)

The existing hard drive isn’t large enough for the STAR VM. Native hard drive
in the laptop is 100GB. The VM is 95GB. Wouldn’t be enough room for the OS.

This is why I want to clone/copy the VM to a hard drive. Once done, I can put
it in the laptop and run directly off what used to be the VM.

My STAR system is on a VM that runs off an external drive. It works fine, but
it’s sluggish and I don’t care to have the hassle of an external drive. I found
a larger hard drive for my laptop, but I want to move the VM to the larger hard
drive and put it into the laptop as the boot drive.

I have both VMware Workstation on a PC as well as VirtualBox on a PC and my
Mac. Here’s the process I want to use:

STAR VM
Clonezilla ISO
320 GB IDE hard drive connected to host via USB

I’ll set up the Clonezilla ISO to boot, which should allow me to copy the VM to
the physical drive. This is a common method to copy a VM to a physical device.

Here’s the rub:

I can’t get the VM to recognize the USB connected drive as a hard drive. While
it gives me the ability to add one via the VM settings, it wants to see a .vmdk
or similar virtual drive, not a physical drive. Apparently there are ways to
create a vmdk file that “points” at a physical drive, but I’ve been
unsuccessful in getting this to work.

I’m stumped as to how to proceed at this point. There’s got to be a way to get
the VM to recognize the USB hard drive.

I think we were preoccupied by fear before the lightning strike. It was almost
dark, even at midday, the wind was very loud, the raindrops actually hurt, and
we had no visual references.. The excitement was really in retrospect. The
"bang" was really loud and I think it stunned us, like a "flash-bang" grenade.
We only realized what happened after the fact when we regained our senses.

That sounds like most of the guys I’ve shot with at my club. A lot of them are

I’ve never paid a lot of attention, but it seems that the hard core guys that
come out every weekend with their own golf carts and shooting vests and such
all use O/Us. I got grouped with a guy at a fundraising shoot last year that
was trashing everyone who didn’t have a Beretta. He made fun of my “import gun”
even though he had never heard of Lanber (very well known in Europe and Down
Under despite being out of business now). As most shooters would do, I offered
to let him shoot it, but he refused and started in with the “nothing but a
Beretta” crap while everyone rolled their eyes.

We all shot better than this guy. He was pretty quiet by the time we got to the
last stand. It was clear he was a hack, as his stance, pull and other aspects
of his form were all out of kilter. One of the other guys in our group offered
in a very diplomatic manner to give him some pointers but the guy blew him off.

My former boss was the guy with the Mossberg and my shooting coach. He’s still
shooting well with that gun, and has no desire to buy anything else. The idea
that the more expensive a gun is makes you a better shooter will never offset
poor technique or fit.

I have a Browning BPS pump in 12 ga. 3 1/2" magnum. I got stopped once by the
wildlife cops in BC who had a hard time believing it only would hold 3 standard
12 ga. shells, but his gauge proved it.

No. Add an accent to the "e" to get French. Friant is

As someone else pointed out, he does not mention replacing the hoses.
Having gone to all that trouble and expense to get the system working
properly, if he didn't replace the hoses as well, he will have leaks,
particularly with the original hoses which were non-barrier hoses.

We have a warm water one at the club. Warm being at least 120deg.
It is a small (for a restaurant unit) 1 rack unit and runs on 110
but it's not for home use being 36x36x72 inch (wxdxh).
Like Scott says it is noisy and fast at about 90 sec per cycle
but dishes do need to be pre rinsed and scrubbed of any stuck on
food as this is more or less just a sanitizer even though it is
called a dishwasher.

Price on a comparable replacement KitchenAid has risen to $850 and up,
so I have been looking at Bosch, Samsung, GE and Whirlpool models with

Bottom ice maker works when it wants to, has been working OK for the
last few months but doesn't put out like it should. I have to
occasionally reset it when it quits cycling. So far temps have been
OK. Repair guy told me that most new fridges are PsOS due to energy

within a short time the top ice maker turned into a pile of junk.
It constantly freezes up with big chunks of ice and gets jammed.
90% of the time it does not work unless you thaw it out then it

Re: [MBZ] ***SPAM*** RE: Samsung refrigerators

2020-07-12 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
They hook up like a regular dishwasher but may need more power (esp Hi temp),
probably 220/240v.
They are not cheap new (like $1-3K). For example:
https://www.katom.com/027-DSP4DPS.html?gclid=Cj0KCQjw6ar4BRDnARIsAITGzlDW7vc3Rf-WwSl0vdH2dJ30ItumZPtpnnMz2B66_h1iaNRE3M9Vj5kaAsuyEALw_wcB

Not ideal for home use, IMO. Price aside, they are not quiet and many racks
are designed for glasses or plates (not both) and some only handle one rack.
So they are great for speed and high volume in a noisy kitchen but have
drawbacks for home use.
