Well, I don't really need another cottage. We are having a difficult
time keeping up with all the things that the existing one needs and we
are not out there enough. I do need another boat however and have been
looking but I am a bottom feeder when it comes to boats and it is
difficult to come by what I want for what I am prepared to spend.

I could use more work space so I would love a larger garage but I need
to win a lottery so that I can buy out the neighbours and acquire their
land as I have no room to build anything useful.

At the moment, the fleet consists of my F150, my wife's Honda Accord and
the 300D. Both cars park inside the garage. I park the truck beside the
garage and I suppose I could enclose the spot it parks in to enlarge the
garage to 3 spots but it would be expensive for what I would gain.

High mileage badges come from MBUSA, not the MBCA.

Get the form off their web site, take the car and form to a dealer to get their
verification stamp, and send in the form. Six weeks later you’ll get a badge

Not really. I only have the one car and sometimes I think I should sell
it because I don't use it much and it is taking up half of my garage.

But then, I drive it, and I come away thinking how great it is for a car

I drove it on Saturday morning of this last week. I went about 15 miles

WOW! I just a memory come flooding back. My mother had a 1981 Chevy Chevette.
It was a total piece of crap. She traded it in on an 82 Oldsmobile Omega.
This would have been about 1984 or 85. The dealership had this beautiful
108/109 that was dark green. I was about 11 years old and I knew then it was
the one I wanted her to get. But, it was a 1969 and the salesman said the
price was $6900. At the time, the Oldsmobile Omega was about $2800 so there
was no chance my Mom was buying it. I don’t remember which model it was. But,
I still remember the front of that car and how cool I thought it was.

That is a very good point and I do want to stick with 123 or older -- but I

If it starts reasonably well you can probably ignore the glow plugs for the
moment.
Setting the valves is a really easy zen kind of project that you should
probably do. If for no other reason than once its done you'll know its done.
The engine will probably be quieter and you'll get the opportunity to replace
the valve cover seal.
I was amazed the first time I set the valves "Thats it?" For some reason I'd
built it up in my mind. Its way easier than I expected and made a big
difference.

And a further failure mode is an ALDA that is broken / leaks off the boost so
fast that it does little good or no good at all. On the early 124 cars, the
ALDA can be taken apart and resealed with fresh O-rings, perhaps your 123 car
is the same.

A methodical approach, small steps, will succeed.

On the driver's side firewall there is a switchover valve inline in the
tube that goes from the manifold to the ALDA. Make sure the rubber bits
that connect the hard lines to the switchover valve are airtight.
Otherwise the ALDA will not see the boost pressure and will not inject
enough fuel.

You were in the right neighbourhood! Just clean out that banjo bolt (you should
be able to blow through it) and you're good to go. I think there's a washer or
two that are at risk of disappearing, so watch out for that. A ball bearing in
the vacuum line that goes to the EGR valve will prevent future clogging.

2019-10-03 Thread Don Snook via Mercedes
Thanks. I think it is definitely worth what I paid. If the question is
whether I would have paid $3,000 for one that had working a/c and great paint
and was cleaner with working odometer and gauges, then I would have opted for
the better one.

If I can’t find a shop here in Memphis that works on these old diesels, I may
have to figure out whether I have the time (and patience) to work on it. I’m
still a little surprised that two different shops that advertise as a Mercedes
repair shop, will not work on these old diesels.I didn’t specifically ask
them. But, I did ask my former BMW Mechanic where to go and he told me don’t
go to these other two places because they refuse to work on old diesels.

It sounds to be like you've gotten a very good deal for $1000. I can hardly buy
a car that runs and drives for $2,000 anymore. $1500 cars used to be my stock
in trade but these days those cars are just junk.

If its reasonably rust free your car is worth $2,000 here easy. The problems
you've reported are all relatively minor. Fix the most important ones (oil
pressure gauge) and then pick away at the little ones while you enjoy the car.

to turn it back just a tad to get the a/c to work. The tach on it also was
funky. I have heard of tons of 123 where the odometer quits working --
although it has not happened to me until now.I have never had an oil
pressure gauge fail (or at least not work).I think the issues I am tackling
are fairly common.

BUT, I take your point. I have no illusions about this car. I only paid
$1000 for it. I know it has not been babied. I don't regret buying it
considering the price. Of course, I did see a craigslist for a 124 diesel. It
is a 1992 with only 122,000 miles and it looks SPECTACULAR and I want it. But,
it is also $7,000. I know if this current 123 turns into too much of a
headache, I have several buyers ready to come get it for $1000.

Good work, Don, although to be honest in all my years of owning 300 diesels I
haven't encountered any of the issues you report. I think you may have picked
up a car that has been at best neglected or - worse - butchered.

Well maybe I am misunderstanding.

Imagine standing in front of the car. On the left side is the air cleaner.
Near the back of the valve cover is a clear (ish) line that goes onto a nipple.
That line stretches over to the firewall on the other side and it goes to a
place where a bunch of other lines go. I disconnected it at the back of the
valve cover where it goes onto a small nipple . This is where the banjo bolt
is, right? I did not take off the bolt. I did take the line off the nipple
and the line was not clogged. But, my list does include taking off the banjo
bolt and cleaning it out.

The boost line often plugs up at the fitting on the back of the intake
manifold. There's a banjo bolt there which you should remove, clean, etc. If it
plugs there, the rest of the line will look relatively clean (because it is!).
You definitely need to disconnect it to clean it.

A few days ago Dan replied to one of my questions about this new to me 1982
300D. He suggested that I step back, take a breath and try to be a little
more methodical with the issues (my wording). I think this was great advice.
I know when I have some big project at work, I don't let it overwhelm me
because I take it one small step at a time. In fact, I have always believed
that was one of my gifts or skills. But, apparently, I forgot about this
method while I was caught up in the excitement of my car project. So, I have
come up with a tentative plan. A few things have been done (sort of) and a few
are in progress and a few won't happen until later (or not at all). I'm open
to advice or suggestions.

Here is my plan so far:

1. Fix exhaust because it is hanging down and I need to fix it to be drivable.
(done — sort of. I replaced the donuts so it’s not hanging down)

2. Check for blow by with the loose oil cap test. Doing it tonight.

3. Check boost line from back of intake. I did this. It looked pretty good.
although I could not blow it out because I couldn’t figure out how to release
the connector where it went to the firewall with a bunch of other stuff.

4. Do a diesel purge — this is the easiest step and whether it addresses
anything, it is certainly a beneficial preventative maintenance step. Replace
fuel filters after purge. Although the primary looks clean but I know that can
be deceiving.

5. Oil and Filter change

6. Because the a/c, vent, defrost doesn’t work at all, I think the problem is
in the CCU unit. Probably just needs resoldered. (I have checked and replaced
the blower motor fuse). So, I will either get a rebuilt version or try to
solder it myself.

7. Address vacuum line issues because it could be effecting a bunch of systems.
I don’t know if I will have the time (or patience) to do this myself or if I
will have a shop do it.

8. Check glow plugs. Isn’t this just a matter of checking the resistance? The
nuts look like the cleanest thing under the hood which makes me think they are
fairly new. But, no way to know for sure.

9. Coolant flush (it has new radiator) with Zerex

10. Check tach amp as suggested and fix with paper because I quit smoking!

11. Possibly replace cluster with newer version? But, one of the reasons to
do this is because oil pressure gauge is not working and the cluster might not
be problem. Replacing cluster would address broken odometer issue.

12. At this point stop and evaluate if I want to keep going or decide to sell
it. I have had others in the 123 Facebook group offer to buy it. They were the
ones that missed out when I bought it.

13. Only if I decide to keep going will I address things like carpet, door
pockets, rebuilding seats (they are not bad, they are not very supportive
anymore), replacing wood veneers in the console a/C panel, replacing crappy
Kenwood aftermarket radio, etc. I think we all know the list of things that
COULD be done is almost endless.
