Minor update to Jim's post...the '81 380SLs had the dreaded Chrysler servo as well. roadsters, or where I can send her to research, meaning which years to look for, what to avoid, the major problems, etc., I know about the rubber parts, and prone to rust in the trunk areas. You're mostly there with that list. Rust in the rockers is an issue, just like all the other similar design era cars (115, 116). The years that come with the Evil Chrysler ACC From Hell are IIRC 77-80, so beware of them as they may easily need a kilobuck repair/upgrade to the servo system (and its amplifier). The early 380's have a single-row timing chain that needs to be kept on top of. Doesn't play well with others applies to the pistons (vs valves). Many have been converted to 2-row chains, but many probably have not. Soft top condition is a big expense if it's unsatisfactory to you. That's most of the ones I can think of off hand, the rest is pretty much normal MB. Pre-76 is D-Jet, which offers extra parts to go wrong, worse mileage, and fire risk if you let the rubber bits underhood go. Pre-76 is also, IIRC, manual valve adjustments. The earliest models are 350 SL, the Euros actually had a 3.5l (and there's also a 2.8l Euro) that scooted, US got anemic smogged 4.5l motors with the 'wrong' badge. 560SL is nice, but eats premium. Some Euro 500SL's around, dunno much about them. Euro bumper and light package many people find particularly attractive, though the anemic US headlight package can be upgraded to truly awesome high-beam performance. (We did ours.) 75-76 450 SL's have underhood catastrophic converters, which help to cook the underhood bits. -- Jim

Suggest she have a PPI done make sure she does some comparision shopping to be sure the deal she thinks she's found is really a deal not a misconception on her part about what a W107 costs on the open market. Some people see a 78 240D and think it's a $80K car - a co-worker made that comment even though he was fairly intelligent but misinformed. Women for some reason seem to fall in love with W107s and have a mental picture of what they cost - make sure she';s not making decisions based on that mental picture. Also, make sure she takes it for an extended test drive - it must be driven far enough to get all the fluids to operating temp - and then the true nature of the way the tranny shifts, the oil pressure drop, etc. Also, the earlier the car the worse it handles IMO. And she must understand the cost of maintanence by talking to a shop that *knows* those cars. Fixing things is one thing - doing oil changes, brake fluid flushes, etc must all be part of the decision. Also - rust must be thoroughly searched for - once it gets a hold in the rockers it's very expensive to stop - and sometimes hard to find unless you get down and look *under* the car - something a woman in nice clothes is unlikely to do - so she needs help. Also, the engine is vvery reliable - but if not getting proper preventative maintanence things like cams can become round instead of egg shapes. The passenger side cam and cam bearings seem to go 1st. I got out of the gas engined MBs because the cost or regular car was more than I cared to spend - a good diesel is a complete opposite. But she probably is infatuated with the 107 and the logic of diesel ownership would be lost on her. ;-) Good luck - I hope you and her stay friends. ;-) Larry T (67 MGB, 74 911, 78 240D, 91 300D) www.youroil.net for Oil Analysis and Weber Parts Test Results http://members.rennlist.com/oil Weber Carb Info http://members.rennlist.com/webercarbs Porsche Road Test http://members.rennlist.com/roadtest/ . - Original Message - From: Rhonald Angelo [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: mercedes@okiebenz.com Sent: Friday, June 30, 2006 11:33 AM Subject: [MBZ] 107--450SL, 560SL Listers, a woman I know, called me last night, and she has interest in a roadster.
