Yeah the school just happens to be closed today. No one really talks about
why. But is is a very poly cultural neighborhood.

Spring break is a term used to justify a vacation regardless of whether
there is a religious holiday.

Surprising. When I was a kid we had "Easter Vacation" in the spring but some
atheist loudmouths felt that was untenable and we've had "Spring Break" now for

Ok let me know how much and where to send it. Not like I will ever use it
here, but I have already had the car for 20 years so it may well be around
for another 20. It takes the kids and dog to school and violin and the park
and that's about it. Gas pedal fell off the floor the other day so need to
weld in a floor pan patch I guess. The water from the AC drain and snow
used to collect in the heel well and it rusted through. I figure one of the
boys can take it to college somewhere. Still only about 207k I think.

Good Yom Kippur to any of you observing it. Schools are shut down here
today - even the Public and Catholic ones.

2021-09-16 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
The first winter I commuted with my '83 240D we had a run of 0F daytime highs.
I would go out and start the car at lunch and run it around a little to keep
heat in the engine so it would start after work. That was with M1 0w40 in it.
With 15w40 conventional I couldn't get it to start reliably below zero without
the block heater.

would often just let the car idle all day. Not ideal, but far better than
risking the possibility of not being able to start or having fuel gel. A rare

Mine was in a garage, but I didn’t have the heat on (in the garage) during the
week. The garage was insulated, but I only ran the heat when I was working in
it.

This was on a 1979 300TD, so it took FOREVER to heat up in Wisconsin winters.
Having a block heater not only made it start better, as you described, but I
would have cabin heat almost instantaneously and throughout my 30 mile highway
commute to work. Because there was minimal traffic on the highway I was able to
run at speed (65 mph) after a few miles of spooling up, but when the ambient
was 20F or below the engine struggled to maintain operating temperature.

The one I saw only concluded that a Mercedes diesel was less environmentally
damaging than an EV. I didn't see that it was "least damaging". I would expect
a little diesel crapbox like they sell in the rest of the world. The problem
with an MB is always going to be weight. You're dragging around a lot of car...

personal transportation was a new Mercedes Diesel.

Keeping your '83 240D on the road for nearly 40 years as an alternative to the
environmental impact of producing the 6 or 8 (or more) cars most people would
own in that span of time is probably more "green" that driving a new EV.

One time I was headed to the airport in Boston and running a little late. The
first row of parking spaces at BOS were "Green vehicle parking". I'm sure they
meant "electric vehicle parking" but I was in a hurry. I took a scrap of paper,
scribbled "Bio" and stuck it on the "diesel" badge on my '83 240D.
When I got back parking enforcement had left a nice note "Very funny, don't try
it again."

You might be right, it looks like pickup truck prices have recently taken a
big dump. 2 months ago everything in the 3-4 year old range was $30,000+, there
was nothing at all in the $15-$20k range and not much sub $15k.Now there are a
lot more trucks, I see some 2017 stuff under $30k. I might be able to replace
my current rust bucket before the bed falls off.

Perhaps the 123 craze is fading? I am stating to see fairly decent 123 turbos
being listed for under $3k now and they seem to sit a while. In the last year
such a car would be listed for $4k or well above and sell quickly.

Or the people needing cars want something newer and felt to be more “reliable”.
I encountered that in finding something to drive in GWN. SWMBA did not want
what to her would be a backup car older than Cash for Clunkers. Now there is a
video game console on wheels in the garage. AT least it does not plug in.
