We're showing 9 degrees a few miles down the road from you. When I lived in
Western NY that was relatively warm for
this time of year, but after almost 12 years down South, this is, as you say,
damn cold!

Wanna trade? It was -22 the night before and about the same last
night. Wed night was -37 in Clinton. Record cold temps around the
state last night. I heard new york had the record for the most
consecutive days of snow and the coldest Dec on record.

we have over 2 feet of snow. that is unusual too!

Guess that is what happens when you take the 15-20 Dems who want to
be prez out of Iowa! Without their hot air, we have cold winters and
cool summers.

i also had gear when i lived cold climates. i had $200 long underwear and
waterproof boots. here i have crocs and fat guy shorts.

i used to astound the foreign students a the university of rochester walking
around in nothing but an ordinary long sleeved shirt and jeans in sub zero
temparatures and not being cold and they were wearing large winter coats and
freezing. i would tell them that it was all just a matter of "getting used
to it" but it was nothing other than the quality of the cold weather gear.

i would impress the russians when i was there by standing in ice water to
show them the "resolve of the american". i had waterproof thermal boots.
they had boots that looked a little like mine, but where just junk. none of
the locals could beat me in a contest of ice water standing.

but as i now live in a climate where it is in the 50s on a typical winter
day, i don't have any gear at all so 20 degrees below freezing is just
killer for me now

I used to wear shorts and sandals at Michigan State unless I was leaving the
dorm, I was used to living in a 65 degree house in the winter. A friend and I
would go to the movies in a neighboring dorm dressed like that (the classrooms
we used for movie night got quite warm with a few hundred bodies in them).
So we'd be calmly walking along in shorts and sandals, sometimes it might be
0-10 degrees F on a clear night, and see what comments it would draw. Most
common was "Where are you guys from, Alaska or something?" I always let Stan
answer that one: "Coastal Texas, actually". Sure, it was a bit nippy walking
around like that, but it was only a 100yd walk, as opposed to two hours in a
packed auditorium holding a winter coat in your lap.

Its about 10F here right now, I just got back from a quick snowmobile ride,
there are 2 trees down and I don't have any chainsaw gas mixed so I can only go
about 2 miles out and back. I was testing some electric socks I'd bought my
wife for Christmas that she doesn't like. I think they're pretty good. Theres
some sort of heating strip right under my toes that doesn't work for beans
wandering around the house but in my boots it gets nice and toasty.
I wore the wrong neck warmer so there was one cold spot just under my chin.
With the correct one I have to keep my helmet open a little to cool off.

You're right its all about having the right equipment...

No heated tunnels between the buildings? I thought just about every

We had "steam tunnels" where the pipes from the university power plant to the
buildings ran under the sidewalks. James Dallas Egbert was supposed to have
lived down there for a while before he died. (I had the room next door to his,
three years after he was gone, so I never met him)

I know from first hand experience about such tunnels at IU and Ball State, as
we used them to move between buildings when we were doing service work.

Re: [MBZ] 14 degrees here in south gwinnett, ga

2009-01-16 Thread Gary Hurst
no, i did when i got caught working on a lock. some professor saw me and
called security. my defense was that some of us really enjoy being there
and the locks hindered this enjoyment. there was no real trouble in
exchange for me vowing to leave the tunnels alone forever, which i did. we
simply moved our activities into the old abandoned buildings.

a lot of us came of age in the 70s, the golden age of anarchy and
destruction. if you saw something you wanted and you couldn't buy it or
didn't want to buy it, you just stole it and never gave it a second
thought. when you took the subway, you waited for the train to be
approaching and you jumped the turnstile. didn't matter that you had a
subway token and money in your pocket, you just jumped it. and the poor
woman locked up behind the bullet proof glass in the token booth could only
just yell "pay your fare! pay your fare" the only people who kept any
order at all in the city was the mafia and you NEVER messed with them.
there was no stealing in bensonhurst!

i'm glad those days of anarchy are over. you don't see this kind of stuff
going on anymore. not very happy with arbitrary state fascism that have
replaced it either, but at least you are petty safe in NYC today. last time
i was there i saw scandanavian looking tourists walking on 110th street in
harlem after dark and walking into central park. in the 70s, this would
have been classified as a "suicide" when they never came back out.

You don't classify any of the many hacking forms as the same mind? -
different medium? That is what I like about hackers - one truck I saw
this week had window sticker that said unorthodox hacking dot com -
haven't visited that yet - but I think hacking fills the void you
speak about.

Is there a picture of a younger jabba that might be a bit less heavy -
it would be interesting to see a pic of the jabba-man in the days of

piece of shit does?" geez, did i ever make a big mistake there :(

Re: [MBZ] 14 degrees here in south gwinnett, ga

2009-01-17 Thread Luther

I did the same things in the '90s for high school! :)

no, i did when i got caught working on a lock. some professor saw me and
called security. my defense was that some of us really enjoy being there
and the locks hindered this enjoyment. there was no real trouble in
exchange for me vowing to leave the tunnels alone forever, which i did. we
simply moved our activities into the old abandoned buildings.

a lot of us came of age in the 70s, the golden age of anarchy and
destruction. if you saw something you wanted and you couldn't buy it or
didn't want to buy it, you just stole it and never gave it a second
thought. when you took the subway, you waited for the train to be
approaching and you jumped the turnstile. didn't matter that you had a
subway token and money in your pocket, you just jumped it. and the poor
woman locked up behind the bullet proof glass in the token booth could only
just yell "pay your fare! pay your fare" the only people who kept any
order at all in the city was the mafia and you NEVER messed with them.
there was no stealing in bensonhurst!

i'm glad those days of anarchy are over. you don't see this kind of stuff
going on anymore. not very happy with arbitrary state fascism that have
replaced it either, but at least you are petty safe in NYC today. last time
i was there i saw scandanavian looking tourists walking on 110th street in
harlem after dark and walking into central park. in the 70s, this would
have been classified as a "suicide" when they never came back out.

this went on for several weeks. guess who lost war?

You did, when you got stuck?
Mitch.
