TEX does have a much longer half life than leather. The cow hide cracks and
discolors. Needs far too much kind loving to keep it nice. Getting the skins
in Frosch back into shape has been a months long trial. The skins in the e300d
are old and cracking. Annual care has not been able to reverse, but only
marginally slow the damage. And with the swap in of a passenger seat with more
damage, I have my work cut out for me.

But it seems that not all Tex is created equal. The seats in my 300SD
seem to have a thinner cover, and they are completely falling apart in
front. The rear seat is still nice, but obviously rear seats tend to
get much less use.

I'm thinking of going with sheepskins in front just to cover it up.

I used sheepskins in Gump. Tex had see better days and was black. On the rare
sunny day, those seats would scorch your flesh. Cold days were made better
with skins. On Frosch, the skins she had were allowing the leather to over age
and I have not put them on again. Trying to get the leather to be supple again.
Spring cleaning and stripping off skins would let you care for the leather at

I do have a set that fits the w107 seats. They are old and have been washed to
try to get soaked in sweat to go away. Not full wool, they are sporty, cut
out/shaved sections. Very kalifornia. Just the seat part, no headrest wools.
Will need fresh under strapping to hold them in place for your seats.

I have had MBs with Tex, leather and cloth. I would rate them from good to bad
in that order. MBTex is pretty much bulletproof and easy to recover if
damaged. Leather, no matter how well it's cared for, does not age well. I
have seen many a really nice exterior with leather than is crap. It really
detracts from the car, and without a lot of time and expense, it's tough to
bring back. Cloth? Forget it. It wears poorly and can't be repaired, only
replaced.

I know when I see an ad for an MB that has MBTex and the seller describes it as
leather that they are not an MB person

These are the same people who thinks that Wilson's sells a good leather coat.
Or that an adult male in leather chaps on a Harley is a badass because he has
good enough credit to be able to buy all that stuff...

Could also be because American cars have passed vinyl as pleather for so many

2012-08-04 Thread David Bruckmann
Front springs look a little weak. Nice how the shot of the steering wheel was
arranged to hide the dash crack. The loose wiper fluid lines suggest neglect.

I'm somewhat amazed that the seats look as good as they do. The '73-and-later
seat pads crumble because of the flame retardants. Perhaps they have already
been replaced...

Never liked that dark green... my preference is 867 Caledonia Green, which I
happen to have on my W115 300D. In fact, the colour was the primary reason I
bought it. The LAST thing I needed was another car!

would have leather not vinyl upholstery. Not entirely unreasonable, if
you ask me.

Are these people who advertize leather when it's Tex just plain stupid or
