But my limited experience suggests that the pressure switch (or timer?) will turn the pump off with air still in the line. So to pump all the air out requires a lot more time than the pump cycle when the key is turned on. --Philip ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

So the jumper is the solution. LnL Sounds like an "improvement" that does not work so well to me. I like my Diesels. Dieselhead wrote: The 'lectric FP should run when the key is "on" until it hits the pressure limit. Should not be a need for a jumper. Am I missing something? The old Saabs used to have a timer in the pump relay, ran for about 5 seconds IIRC. My 190e does something similar, and I think it's on a timer not a pressure switch. I don't know if my e320 operates as it's supposed to, but I had Brianna turn the key to run while I had my hand on the pump, and nothing happened until she turned it to start. I never hear the pump from the driver's seat like I do with the 190e. What I did after finding out that I had power at the fuel pump relay and that jumpering the relay socket did not get me any fuel pressure under the hood: I bought a used "e320" fuel pump on eBay. When it got here last week, I crawled under to R&R it and found the old pump has screw terminals while the new pump takes a plug in connector. At least I did prove the pump bad, because I was getting 10.8V at the pump terminals during cranking but the pump wasn't running. So I ordered one with screw terminals from another eBay seller last Thursday. Monday night I got an email from Paypal saying my money was refunded on the 2nd pump. No other contact from the seller. After giving it some thought, I soldered two wires into the connector on the new pump, then filled the socket with RTV silicone. Today after the silicone was hard, I swapped pumps. Lost about an ounce of gas after clamping the hose from the tank to the pump with needle nose vise grips. (My pump is just in front of the gas tank, not by the filter) Cranked it over 4 cycles without even a sputter. Darn, I was totally sure it was the pump, especially after testing for power at the pump itself. Then I got an assistant to crank it while I held onto the pump. The pump was indeed running, and the engine sputtered a bit. Crawled out from under the car, cranked it over, and it immediately settled into a smooth idle. It just took 5 start attempts to get the system primed again. Now I've got to prime it all over again when I replace the filter (which cost me more than the used pump, BTW). Mitch, Sorry I didn't recognize the original post as your initials. I think that is a good choice. I bought a used fuel pump for the 380 and it turned out ok for at least 5 yrs. ...so far, so good. Big Blue is sitting on my Landgrebe dolly in my driveway, with a battery charger on an extension cord. I like that dolly better than a Demco Kar Kaddy. Tows like a dream, at least at 30mph. It's nice not to have to wonder if the dolly fenders will steer into the car's fenders when you turn around in a parking lot. (Demco has steerable fenders, Landgrebe's are fixed) Will crawl under the car tomorrow to confirm my fuel pump diagnosis. Then need to get in touch with Q Jr to see if a Pierberg is really worth as much as bimby.biz says it is. I guess it could be worse, Advance Auto wants $560 for a Bosch 67968. I often get stuff at AA when I have a 40% coupon code, but I really don't want to pay 60% of AA's price. CrockAuto lists two Boschs for my car, they want twice as much for the other one as they want for the 67968. Re: [MBZ] 1999 e320 still won't start
I found this which seems to pertain. I have voltage at one terminal of the fuel pump relay under the back seat with ignition off and voltage at another with ignition on. I have 0.6V from ground to the relay terminal that's switched by the relay, seems like it should be 0.0V. Can't hear pump over traffic noise when I jumper across the pump relay terminals, and don't have pressure to the fuel rail after I jump the relay. I'm concluding that I've got an open circuit in the pump wiring or the pump itself, or the pump isn't getting good ground. Doesn't seem to be much more to do here in the hospital parking lot. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Not sure on that model, but the 60 to 87 gassers, it is near the RR axle. Take a couple of long wires to run jumper to the battery. Today it won't fire at all. Borrowed a better code reader from FLAPS, it knew there had been an evaporative emissions event since last reset, my Scangauge didn't mention that. In scrolling through all the available readings, the only thing that caught my attention was MAP = 0.0 " hg, no matter whether it was cranking or just sitting. I tried unplugging the MAP, and then the MAF, still won't fire. I hit the schrader valve in the fuel rail, no fuel. How do I jump the fuel pump relay to make sure I'm getting power to the pump?
