I'm half tempted to check this out. It's not terribly far away. I assume that "black death" is not readily visible without at least removing the plastic engine cover? What would I look for? Re: [MBZ] 2005 E320 CDI - 172k miles - $8,900
Price is a touch high, but not out of range compared to other comparable sales I’ve seen. Yes, you must remove the plastic cover over the cylinder head to see the effects of the “Black Death” condition, if it exists. It will be obvious if affected. Look around the base of each injector for a buildup of black crud, which is burned oil and fuel that’s slipped by the injector. This is caused by the sealing ring at the base of the injector failing and allowing combustion products to leak out of the cylinder. At the very beginning, it appears as bubbling around the base of the injector and gradually worsens over time. Really bad examples can have the whole cylinder head area completely filled with the black crap that has to be literally chipped away to get to the injectors and head. Repair is not fun and will require some special tools, like an injector puller, but they’re not terribly expensive. It does have some risk, however, as the hold down bolts can be run in too far and puncture the water jacket. I’ve done it and I don’t ever want to do it again. -D Sent from my iPad > On May 18, 2022, at 11:17 PM, Allan Streib via Mercedes > wrote: > > I'm half tempted to check this out. Does this happen to pretty much all of them eventually, is it rare, or ballpark how likely is it to happen? Re: [MBZ] 2005 E320 CDI - 172k miles - $8,900
Good question, I don’t know. I suspect it’s mostly age/mileage related. When I had mine, which is now a resident of Okie Acres, I found that there were thicker sealing rings that could be found in Europe and were preferred as replacements. According to what I read, when using the thicker sealing rings BD was less likely to reoccur. Even after I resealed the front three cylinders on mine (the back three were good) a couple of them still bubbled slightly. I figured I would watch it and live with it until it got worse. Understand that replacing the sealing rings involves pulling the injectors, which often requires a dent-puller-like tool, cleaning the bore and seat, cutting a new seat (need a seat cutting tool), installing the new sealing rings, torquing the hold-down bolts in a specific way to a very low torque value (need a small torque wrench capable of accuracy in a very low range.) Screw up any one of these steps and it’s game over. A very high stakes sort of job. -D > On May 19, 2022, at 11:36 AM, Allan Streib via Mercedes > wrote: > > Does this happen to pretty much all of them eventually, is it rare, or > ballpark how likely is it to happen? > > On Thu, May 19, 2022, at 7:51 AM, dan penoff.com via Mercedes wrote: >> Price is a touch high, but not out of range compared to other >> comparable sales I’ve seen. >> >> Yes, you must remove the plastic cover over the cylinder head to see >> the effects of the “Black Death” condition, if it exists.
