[MBZ] 240D shifter
Rick, That is not unreasonable, I’ll try to find a shifter first then that. He has a lot of work and likes to choose what he wants to do. JI [Have the Indy take the old shifter off, help him push the car out the door, have him install new bushings, help him push the car back in, reinstall the shifter. Probably take longer to move the car than fix it. Or option B, find a new Indy.] ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

I think Jamie is right. My '85 190D had some weird shifter issues, it's been a long time but I remember not being able to find reverse reliably and having to push it out of a couple parking spaces. New shifter bushings fixed it. -Curt On Monday, May 10, 2021, 9:19:32 PM EDT, Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes wrote: HI John, Most likely the bushings on each end of the shift rods (there are three of them, so 6 bushings) are probably gone. Best action is to order up all the bushings from the classic center and spend a weekend rebuilding everything. You'll be surprised by how nice it can all be when repaired properly. Agreed, I had a Vanagon with a manual and it was hard to find the gears when I first got it. Replacing all the bushings and following the service manual procedure to adjust the linkage made a world of difference. Happened to my 280SE 3.5 coupe as the tech was backing out of the shop. Lost all control. As it occurred at the end of the day and meant they had to keep the car another day, it was very embarrassing. [MBZ] 240D Shifter
Hello list, I have a ’83 240D with a 4 speed manual. The car has about 330K miles. I was driving today and when shifting into 2nd gear the shifter got stuck in neutral position and would not move in any direction, I pulled and pushed the lever and it freed up and I continued on everything working fine. I headed home and on a hill had to downshift into first and the shifter suddenly felt like it was not connected to anything. The car was still in 3rd gear but I couldn’t start out in 3rd and it stalled. I started the engine and the shifter and transmission worked normally the rest of the way home. The problem is intermittent, from normal to stuck to normal to disconnected to normal. Has anyone ever experienced this on a 240D 4-speed? Any ideas as to what it could be? Re: [MBZ] 240D Shifter
Brian- I'll try that. So, if it were working properly would I have to pull up on the shifter to get into reverse? Yeah, unless the mechanism is worn (as you suspect). Or is it push down? I think the 4-sp and 5-sp trannies differ in this area. Once I'd gone through the Frankenheap's shifter everything started working a lot better. With the slop in the bushing repaired the necessary actions got a lot crisper. (Heap had a nasty twist in the knob because one side of the shaft was unpinned in the plastic bushing. Really unpleasant to use.) Where is the worn plastic bushing and how do I get at it and fix it? It's socketed in the top of the shifter mechanism, where the shaft holding the knob goes in. I believe there is a collar that unscrews from the top that releases the shaft/pin/bushing assembly. Looks like a 50-cent part that's meant to be replaced from time to time, but isn't necessarily easy to come by! My notes, such as they are, are in http://cathey.dogear.com/frankenheap.html on December 14, 2005. -- Jim

In the meantime, does it help if you push toward the ground as you move it into first? I've started doing that after a couple grinds. Re: [MBZ] 240D Shifter
If you take the shifter out, you'll probably find that the collar on the plastic bushing has broken partially or completely off. A new bushing ordered from Germany will probably solve the problem. Meade Dillon [EMAIL PROTECTED] sent me diagrams and parts numbers which were invaluable in replacing parts that had fallen off and dropped to the road.
