Re: [MBZ] 240D exhaust repair

2017-11-24 Thread Dimitri via Mercedes
You have to dissect the rotted pipe stub out of the muffler, insert a new pipe
into the hole in the side of the muffler and weld the new pipe to the sheet
metal on the muffler. Since the steel is thicker on the pipe, you have to
direct the mig nozzle more towards the pipe and weave the puddle into the sheet
metal carefully so as to not burn through the muffler but at the same time get
good penetration on the pipe.

I dont' thing there is 2 " of pipe off the muffler.  I think the only
thing that MIGHT work is to have a connector section that is smaller and
fits up inside the muffler.  At the end of the day it probably needs a
new muffler.  Which it being a 1 year only sort of deal is $300+ iirc.

On 11/24/2017 6:11 PM, Curley McLain via Mercedes wrote:

If there is at least 2" of pipe in front  of the muffler, grind off
the welds, and use the tin can hose clamp bandaid.   It is cracking
from vibration.  the bandaid releives the stress and vibration.  I
have run those on 200Ds for 40 + years.  You need to replace the can
every 2-7 years.  Or you can use 22-26 ga flat steel.  One hose clamp
on the back, one on the front.

Or,  you can give the POS to Dimitri.  He will fix it!

I need to do something about the exhaust on my 95 e300. It started
breaking off close to where the pipe runs into the rear muffler. I
welded it up, rather poorly probably as it was my first time. It
lasted a couple of weeks then started breaking loose again. I welded
it some more but it probably won’t last. I need to pull it off again
and see about getting some sort or connector that will fit over or in
the pipe and weld that.

Wow! 22 years of patch jobs, now that’s impressive! Might take you up on the
resonator and muffler offer! The last exhaust I repaired was on the 240 that
Curt gave me (formerly Dwight’s)-the one with the head issue. I repaired the
muffler and resonator with sheet metal as well as replacing a good amount of
the pipes. Whole thing cost me $90 in parts from flaps that I pieced together.
It fit better than an OE exhaust as I pretty much tailored it to car!
