It is difficult. I still find myself waiting for pre-glow on my 300E. No

I always considered that time as dedicated to letting the fuel pump get the
system up to ooperating pressure before starting the car.
Same sequence as the Diesels - get in, turn key on, curse the buzzer, fasten
seat belt, start the car.

Would this be CIS?
Big $$ trouble with fuel distributor or warm up regulator if you leave one of
those sitting unused, especially with the short shelf life that modern gasoline
has.

Re: [MBZ] 280SE W126

2009-03-24 Thread Tom Hargrave
I've had two 280 engines, one in a 75 280 and the other in a 78 280CE. Both
engines were sensitive to fuel quality and needed mid-grade minimum. My
oldest Son had a 1979 280E and he loved the car.

Also, I'll second the oil leak issues. But my leaks were not caused by the
cam cover, they coming from the gasket between the cam carrier & head. This
one's a pain to fix.

Valve lash is not that hard providing you own the correct crowsfoot wrench.
Some angles are impossible with standard hand tools.

Thanks,
Tom Hargrave

Noisy valve train and leaky valve cover gaskets are the only things I know
of. Mechanical lash, you have to adjust valves all the time, and it's
impossible to get it really quiet.

I've heard valve timing is a pain to set, but otherwise it's as robust as
any Benz gasser. Probably a gas hog, too.

Your diesels are faster, though.

Not faster than an M110 Euro, even in the 126 chassis! 180+ hp and
equal torque, not 120 or whatever the emasculated American version put
out.

I had an M110 W123 once. About an hour after I bought it, I got out my
stethoscope to try and find the source of a tapping/clicking sound in
the motor while idling. It was elusive, so I revved the engine a bit at
idle, and the motor went "bang" and instantly stopped rotating. When I
moved the car, there was a pile of aluminum shards on the ground under
the engine bay. My best guess is that the oil pump failed, and the
engine threw a rod.

Just thought I'd share my (first and last) M110 experience It seems
like they would make for a very powerful and smooth car if the engine is
in good shape.
