[MBZ] 78 240D Making Odd Noise
Have you tried rotating the tires and, if so, does the sound still seem to emanate from the same location? If not, you may have an internal separation. Good luck. G. M. Re: [MBZ] 78 240D Making Odd Noise
Thanks - the noise is nothing like that - more like a loud hum some have ascribed to a wheel bearing -- Glad it doesn;t sound like driveshaft problems - Larry T (67 MGB, 74 911, 78 240D, 91 300D) www.youroil.net for Oil Analysis and Weber Parts Test Results http://members.rennlist.com/oil PORSCHE POSTERS! youroil.net Weber Carb Info http://members.rennlist.com/webercarbs . - Original Message - From: Peter Frederick [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Sent: Saturday, August 04, 2007 8:26 PM Subject: Re: [MBZ] 78 240D Making Odd Noise Bad center u-joint sounds like a bad muffler, but varies with road speed independent of engine speed. Cure is driveshaft replacement, it's much cheaper to get a used shaft than replace the bearing ($650 last time I heard for the repair). Used shaft is about $100. Check for vibration at the carrier -- just aft of the center of the driver's seat on the tunnel. A bad carrier bearing makes a grinding noise. [MBZ] 78 240D Making Odd Noise
Howdy - My 240D has a sound like something is running besides the engine - like a roar that is not dependant on the speed of the engine but *is* dependant on the speed of the car. My car has a solid fan attachment (no viscous clutch) and I've replaced the motor mounts which cured a lot of strange noises. The roar gets louder as I speed up and quieter as I slow down. What do bad center bearings sound like? I've had bad u-joints on other cars and know what they felt like - and this ain;t like that. Any reason I should expect the noise to be the same? I must be rambling - never had a problem like this before - Any ideas? Re: [MBZ] 78 240D Making Odd Noise
It could be the differential mount or a wheel bearing too. My '81 300CD had a hum/roar coming from the right front that couldn't be heard until reaching at least 40MPH. Beyond that, the hum would become higher in frequency.
