Bad center u-joint sounds like a bad muffler, but varies with road speed independent of engine speed. Cure is driveshaft replacement, it's much cheaper to get a used shaft than replace the bearing ($650 last time I heard for the repair). Used shaft is about $100.
Check for vibration at the carrier -- just aft of the center of the driver's seat on the tunnel. A bad carrier bearing makes a grinding noise.
