Re: [MBZ] 87 300TD Fixer

2007-05-17 Thread Rick Knoble

No rodbender. No wiring harness problems. Ac evap is a PITA to
change. '87 300TD's are one of the "Holy Grails" of Mercedes
dieseldom. It is the only year diesel 124 wagons were imported. It
is also the only year that particular engine was imported in the 124
chassis. Very powerful.

OK so assume the head is trashed. I suppose a replacement could be
scavenged from somewhere -- how much $$? Can that piston be changed
out with the engine in the car? Would it be better to just try to
find a complete donor engine?

'87 heads are the "14" heads and are prone to cracking. Replacements can be
purchased used from salvage yards, eBay and perhaps our list sponsor Kaleb.
I believe the latest update on that head is a "22" casting number. New heads
can be purchased from Rusty. I "think" you can change out the piston in the
car, but that question would be better addressed by some of the other list
guru's. Replacement engine? ask K'leb

I thought about the ether possibility too. So would this 6 cylinder
be a "rodbender" ? Have wiring harness problems? Any other common
issues?

OK I read that auction again and he does say that a valve "cracked".
But -- isn't that a pretty rare thing to have happen? What would
cause it? Just a random defect or is it indicative of other neglect?
