They'll start weaving back and forth in the lane, then they'll pull right up onto my back bumper, then they'll back off and lay on the horn. I always give them a friendly wave at that point. I used to have a bumper sticker on my diesel Vanagon that said, 48 HORSEPOWER - PLEASE, JUST PASS. I figured people were less likely to get angry if I could get them laughing first. I don't get angry at slow drivers, except for the ones who get panicky and hit the brakes on entrance ramps, when they should be speeding up. Re: [MBZ] Auto tranny 240Ds are slow!
Driving an auto 240D takes a certain mindset ... and a great deal of patience for town driving. However, they are great road trip cars. I love mine. It saw 85 mph with no complaint coming back from the last OkieQ. If I want to accelerate, I climb onto my motorcycle. If I want to just cruise along, I take the 240D. I will admit, however, that the Benz turbos did seem to pull away from me rather quickly leaving stop lights during the OkieQ convey rides. Come to think of it, MMM's dearly departed 4-cylinder gasser also left me in the dust. But I do love my 240D. Re: [MBZ] Auto tranny 240Ds are slow!
I once had the misfortune of having to rent a geo metro for a week in Silicon Valley. Beyond the fact that the 3 cyl engine was pitiful, mind in rush hour bumper to bumper 20 mph traffic this was ok, but the fact it had no power steering meant that my arms arched after getting back to my apt from the jarring that went on the concrete expansion joints on hyw 101. I discovered the following week that if I rented 1 or 2 levels up it was only an extra $5 per day, and usually Hertz overbooked those models at the SF airport and I'd get a full size car instead for no extra charge. Re: [MBZ] Auto tranny 240Ds are slow!
Good point. My new attitude as soon as I sit down in my car is I don't really car if I get there or not so by connection I don't really care how long it takes me to get there or what road I take to get there or anything. I find myself smiling alot more while I drive. The other day I stopped for fuel, I've been stopping at this one particular station because its on a hill and Hammie's starter has been refusing to work when warm (I have the replacement but haven't put it in yet). So I fueled up and chatted with the young hottie fueling the gasser next to me, she thought Hammie was just dreamy. I hopped in to take off, hit the key and nothing happened. So I got up and gave a little push to get rolling. The young hottie asked what I was doing, starting my car. She gave me the confused look so I said she could get in the car and watch if she wanted. She got in the passenger seat, I pushed again, we rolled a few feet, I slipped the trans into 3rd, eased out the clutch and we were running. I was joking when I said she could get in and very surprised when she did. She seemed real surprised when she noticed my wedding ring. *sigh* -Curt Date: Tue, 27 Sep 2005 11:43:18 -0400 From: Steve MacSween [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [MBZ] Auto tranny 240Ds are slow! My apoligies ahead of time to the good Dr I will drive no other car I like my old diesel best by far Everytime before I go I must make sure the plugs will glow Living here in hot AZ The glowing time is short for me As people pass they point and joke It must be an old car...look at it smoke I always will tell them...and I am no liar You wish your exhaust smelled like a deep fat fryer I get passed by a man on a jog Cars go 'round me like a scalded dog When we sit at stoplights they really scoff 'Cause it's Italian Tune-ups when I take off. This is quite fun, I tell you the truth I do it each time for Old Dr. Booth For all of her maintenance I keep detailed charts I call Kaleb and Rusty for all of my parts I wash her and wax her and park out of the sun No dino juice for me...it must be Mobil 1 When I get looked at by people in fine raiment I tell them I'm glad I don't have their Hummer payment Long after their cars begin to corrode And they frequently will have to be towed Their accounts, because of payments, will errode My pride in my car will then explode Because I will still be klatta klatta down the road. Re: [MBZ] Auto tranny 240Ds are slow!
Heck no, if I'm in the passing lane I'm actually passing. I get the most honks where RT 2 and 495 meet in Littleton, MA. I come around the cloverleaf at 35mph and accelerate as fast as I can onto 495. If I can merge immediately I can be at 65mph by the top of the hill which isn't screaming acceleration but is a steady increase. So what happens pretty frequently is that I'm in the right lane, pedal to the floor speeding up as fast as I can. The next 2 lanes over are generally busy so whomever was behind me is staying behind me to the top of the hill which is only about 1/4 - 1/2 mile. So at least once a week I'll get some jackass who absolutely can't wait. They always act the same. They'll start weaving back and forth in the lane, then they'll pull right up onto my back bumper, then they'll back off and lay on the horn. I always give them a friendly wave at that point. As soon as theres an opening they SHOOT by me usually with the horn blaring and middle finger raised. Then I'll watch as they bob and weave through traffic only to inevitably get cutoff by some slow moving truck or something. They work so hard and gain so little... -Curt Date: Tue, 27 Sep 2005 10:34:43 -0700 From: Gabriel S. [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [MBZ] Auto tranny 240Ds are slow! Whats really crazy are the people who will honk the horn and flip me off and then fight their way over into the passing lane. Quite often when I get off the highway I'm right behind a guy who 20 minutes earlier was totally pissed that I was holding him up. I don't get angry at slow drivers, except for the ones who get panicky and hit the brakes on entrance ramps, when they should be speeding up. If they want to commit suicide that's fine, but they shouldn't get me involved. ;)

Reminds me of an article I read in the Indy Star a couple of years ago when the first of the new Beetle Convertibles came out. I don't remember it verbatim, but the general idea was this: When you press the pedal to the floor, in true German efficiency, the engine files a request in triplicate to the transmission which is then read, lost, considered, found, lost again then finally denied. I owned a 240D for a while myself and I know *exactly* what you mean. It gets tiring having to clean all the splattered bugs off the BACK window glass, but at least the windshield remains clean. Of course, now I think my 87 300D needs to be faster, after having spent too much time in the Q-ship... gotta get that intercooler installed, Casey-style... :-) Best regards, Dave M.
