I too have noticed over the years that 123 240D's feel MUCH slower than
115 versions. Talking about autos, not sticks. Same probably applies
though.

Gentlemen,

An auto 240D is not necessarily slow. Our 75 (W115)
isn't head-snapping fast, but is easily quick enough
to maneuver and stay ahead of traffic. It has a great
crisp motor and tranny. It seems to be geared low,
not sure, but it definitely feels nimble and
responsive.

On the other hand, the 77 240D (W123, manual) was
abysmally slow when I got it last year. It is
steadily improving with M1 and hard driving but has a
long way to go to catch up with the W115. I think it
is heavier than the W123, at least it feels that way.
I drove another W123 240D the other day and it was a

slug, although the owner crowed about its strong
motor. But I know of at least one 240D that isn't
slow.

Driving an auto 240D takes a certain mindset ... and a great deal of
patience for town driving. However, they are great road trip cars. I love
mine. It saw 85 mph with no complaint coming back from the last OkieQ.

If I want to accelerate, I climb onto my motorcycle. If I want to just
cruise along, I take the 240D.

I will admit, however, that the Benz turbos did seem to pull away from me
rather quickly leaving stop lights during the OkieQ convey rides. Come to
think of it, MMM's dearly departed 4-cylinder gasser also left me in the
dust.

But I do love my 240D.

I once had the misfortune of having to rent a geo metro for a week in
Silicon Valley. Beyond the fact that the 3 cyl engine was pitiful,
mind in rush hour bumper to bumper 20 mph traffic this was ok, but
the fact it had no power steering meant that my arms arched after
getting back to my apt from the jarring that went on the concrete
expansion joints on hyw 101.

I discovered the following week that if I rented 1 or 2 levels up it
was only an extra $5 per day, and usually Hertz overbooked those
models at the SF airport and I'd get a full size car instead for no
extra charge.

I see it as part of a larger problem, not really related to driving per se.
Our society is largely unhappy, and getting worse by the day.

I use the example of my old neighbourhood, a slightly upscale (rental) urban
area close to a bar/resto/tourist strip. Very much in favour with 19-30 year
old singles. When I moved there, the pharmacy had one pharmacist and one
clerk on duty behind the counter and you could often stop and chat with the
pharmacist easily, as it was rarely busy.

When I left after about 15 years there, the population had not changed much
but there were now three pharmacists and up to four clerks behind that same
counter and it was pandamonium from opening to close.

GP physicians mostly treat unhappiness and discontent in the guise of

At that speed Hammie will regularly turn in 26-27mpg. At 65mph I've gotten an
all time high of 31.7mpg but that was with all season tires. I noticed a
consistant 2-3mpg loss when I switched to snowtires but I'm too cheap to have 2
sets of tires and I don't really have anywhere to put the offseason set. These
snows will be pretty well worn out next spring so it'll be time for new all
seasons.

Side question, I've got (I think) 30psi in the tires on the car now. Sidewall
max is I think 35psi (need to check). I saw a post the other day that suggested
running more like 32. I think the placard on the car recommends something like
28psi...

I'm thinking at 32psi I could squeak out a couple more mpg.

2005-09-27 Thread Curt Raymond

Good point. My new attitude as soon as I sit down in my car is I don't really
car if I get there or not so by connection I don't really care how long it
takes me to get there or what road I take to get there or anything. I find
myself smiling alot more while I drive.

The other day I stopped for fuel, I've been stopping at this one particular
station because its on a hill and Hammie's starter has been refusing to work
when warm (I have the replacement but haven't put it in yet). So I fueled up
and chatted with the young hottie fueling the gasser next to me, she thought
Hammie was just dreamy. I hopped in to take off, hit the key and nothing
happened. So I got up and gave a little push to get rolling. The young hottie
asked what I was doing, starting my car. She gave me the confused look so I
said she could get in the car and watch if she wanted. She got in the passenger
seat, I pushed again, we rolled a few feet, I slipped the trans into 3rd, eased
out the clutch and we were running. I was joking when I said she could get in
and very surprised when she did. She seemed real surprised when she noticed my
wedding ring.

*sigh*

2005-09-27 Thread B Dike

I drove another W123 240D the other day and it was a
slug, although the owner crowed about its strong
motor. But I know of at least one 240D that isn't
slow.

Yes, I know, old news to most of you. But I'd never
 driven one for any
significant length of time until my indy lent me one
 for two days while
working on my 124. Now I know what drive it like
 you stole it
REALLY means! It maintained cruising speed just
fine on the flat, but it's
pretty disconcerting to floor the loud pedal at any
speed over 50 or so and
have basically nothing to speak of happen unless you
 have a few minutes to
wait. I'm impressed with the gumption of people who
 drive these on a
regular basis, especially if it's in a place with
 high-speed cutthroat
 freeway traffic.

Re: [MBZ] Auto tranny 240Ds are slow!

2005-09-27 Thread Curt Raymond

Heck no, if I'm in the passing lane I'm actually passing.

I get the most honks where RT 2 and 495 meet in Littleton, MA. I come around
the cloverleaf at 35mph and accelerate as fast as I can onto 495. If I can
merge immediately I can be at 65mph by the top of the hill which isn't
screaming acceleration but is a steady increase. So what happens pretty
frequently is that I'm in the right lane, pedal to the floor speeding up as
fast as I can. The next 2 lanes over are generally busy so whomever was behind
me is staying behind me to the top of the hill which is only about 1/4 - 1/2
mile.

So at least once a week I'll get some jackass who absolutely can't wait. They
always act the same. They'll start weaving back and forth in the lane, then
they'll pull right up onto my back bumper, then they'll back off and lay on the
horn. I always give them a friendly wave at that point.

As soon as theres an opening they SHOOT by me usually with the horn blaring and
middle finger raised. Then I'll watch as they bob and weave through traffic
only to inevitably get cutoff by some slow moving truck or something. They work
so hard and gain so little...

read, lost, considered, found, lost again then finally denied.
