If the master cylinder piston doesn't go ALL the way to the top, the port where fluid gets in from the reservoir will be covered and no fluid will ever get in to deal with clutch wear or leaks. It might take compressing the piston a bit to get it all in there, but the rod should not be tight - ie, it should not be pushing the piston in at all. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Next up I need to replace the voltage regulator then get the blower and AC working. Front end needs to be rebuilt and the flex disks and center support need to be replaced. Not sure yet if I will do all that or sell as is. One this is certain I will not be doing any of that unless I get my lift going. I got home with the 8ft section of hose and I just decided to leave it as is rather than cutting it shorter. I filled the tube with fluid from the HF oil can squirter then attached it to the bleeder and began pumping. I ended up developing some air pockets in the house so I removed it from the bleeder again and got them out. I determined the issue the whole time might have been I did not have the bleeder loose enough. I loosened it some more and continued pumping. After a while I noticed a small amount of movement in the brake reservoir. Then the level started to slowly rise. I closed the bleeder screw then went under the dash to pull the linkage rod out to install the one originally on the car. The one that came with the MC was much shorter than the MB one that came off the car so I stuck the one that came with the MC back in. I had a hell of a time compressing it to get it back to the bolt hole. Finally got it, screwed it back down and now the clutch works! I am not sure if it was a matter of leaving the rod disconnected from the clutch pedal, opening the bleed screw more, or using the oil can instead of the hose connected to brake caliper. At the end of the day I think I prefer the oil can method because using the caliper has the potential to pump dirty brake fluid up into the brand new clutch hydraulics (although in this case the fluid looks clean like it was recently flushed. Re: [MBZ] Bleeding 240D clutch
The cylinder came with 2 rods, the one already installed on it the instructions say are for 123, the other rod is for 126. I have completely disconnected it from the clutch pedal so length should not matter as far as bleeding goes. I am going to try the oil can method next with a longer piece of hose so I can watch what is happening with the reservoir. Re: [MBZ] Bleeding 240D clutch
When the pedal is all the way up, is there any free play? You should have 1/4 to 1/2 inch of free travel at the pedal before you feel pump rod and pressure engagement. If you have no free play at the top, then the piston rubber will be covering the end travel port in the master cyl, and you will not be letting fluid into the piston to push the slave. No free play at the top of pedal travel.. no pump... no pump, no clutch... Is there an adjuster on the rod? Most clutch setups have an adjustment in the rod length to make it possible to dial in free play... I don't know how yours is, don't think I've ever done one. Yes, something like that oil can from Harbor Freight.. I like one with a rigid spout instead of flex because the poly tubing stays on better. If it’s like the clevis rod for a brake cylinder, there should be a small amount (1/8”) of play between the end of the rod and the piston in the clutch cylinder. -D > On Jul 4, 2020, at 10:25 AM, Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes > wrote: > > I had to push the rod in about an 8th of an inch or less to get it to line up > with the pedal mounting point. Re: [MBZ] Bleeding 240D clutch
My favorite way to bleed clutch systems is to use an old fashioned hand pump oil gun. I fill the pump oiler with brake fluid, attach a hose to the pump output pipe and to the bleed screw on the clutch slave cylinder. Then loosen the cap on the clutch master cylinder [leave it on, just not tight, if you leave it off, you will squirt brake fluid where you don't want it under the hood]. With the clutch pedal up, start pumping the hand oiler to pump brake fluid from the bottom [slave cylinder is lower, air likes to move up] ... Check the clutch master for fluid in the reservoir so you don't over fill it. When the Master cylinder reservoir is 1/4 or more full of fluid, you have displaced all the air in the system, so close the bleed port and remove the line and pump... finish filling the master reservoir, and tighten the cap... At that point, you should have no air trapped in the entire system and you should have a clutch that works.
