Re: [MBZ] Carfax/ 454 milage

A 454 is like holding a 5 gallon can over the engine, and drill a
5/16 hole in the bottom. in short, they s uck. and they are gutless.

My favorite story is in 1979, we had just put a 392 (IH) 4 barrel in
the old IH 1500. It had well over 300,000 miles on it at the
time. We were overloaded, way overloaded, going uphill, closing fast
on a chevy pickup pulling an empty stock trailer. He got in the
creeper lane, and as we passed, i could see the 454 on the side of
the truck, and it sounded like it was grunting to uphill empty. I
nailed the 392, opened up the back two barrels and the truck stood up
on the ringgear and we accelerated uphill and left the gas sucking
454 in the dust.

Those who have ridden an Earles fork BMW will understand "standing up
on the ring gear." I loved that effect!

And we probably went twice as far on a gallon of gas! The load was
at least 5 tons.

Pure speculation here. I think that anyone who says a tinkernational 392 has
more pulling power than a good 454 hasn't ever driven a 454. And mileage? A
454 truck will average 6-7 pulling or not. I know folks with
tinkenationals.travelalls and scouts...none of them get better than 8-9
empty.

He didn't say 'good 454'. He was talking about a 454 seen in 1979, probably
stock, and probably made in the last half of the 1970's. Do you remember how
crappy most cars ran from around 1975 to the age of fuel injection?

not so

We got 10-13 for years and years in 1500s with 304 to 392. the 266
v-8 on a 1500 got 12-13. Pickups get better mileage. I drove one
pickup that got 17 if you were careful with the throttle.

The 3/4 ton 73 with an 9' van body also got 12-13 for years and years.

This over 30years and hundreds of thousands of miles, not a one tank average.

They do have to be tuned right. No different than a OM 616/617

I think thats just older 454s. My friend's '89 had plenty of power, we hauled
around some pretty big farm tractors with it and it never even grunted...

i remember those days. Had a Chevy Blazer with the 400 small block and
full time 4 wheel drive. Breaking double digit MPGs was cause for
celebration. Made a great "pull the boat to the lake" vehicle with the

I was in high school in the late 70'a/early 80's. Vehicles available to me
included a '77 Nova, 250, 3sp, 22 mpg hwy (Dad bought this because of the
stellar fuel economy, gas was over 60 cents a gallon by then. It replaced a '70
Kingswood with 400 small block), '73 F100, 360 2bbl/automatic, 12-14mpg, '67
Jeepster Commando, 231 3sp, 4.27 axles, not much better than the pickup, and a
'76 CB200T (the only one I actually owned) 78 mpg.

I clearly remember the summer that the pumps couldn't calculate prices over $1
per gallon so they set them for half price and then charged you double the pump
reading. I believe it was 1981, I thought it was terrible that I had to pay $2-3
to fill my bike, and filling the Jeep was a major investment.
