I must agree, but I don't know of any way to efficaciously answer or
comment on a particular post without retaining the original "subject." I
notice that your post about not changing misleading "subject lines"
retained the "Chain crimp tool" subject line as well.

If there were a CLEAR policy on that (say change the line followed by a
"was - old subject") then I'd sure TRY to follow it (I'm SURE I'd
sometimes slip) but there seems to be NO clear policy and changing the
subject line when that's relevant is a rare and pleasant surprise - not
something that's routinely done.

In addition to the frustration of trying to follow an active discussion
thread in the absence of relevant subject headers, without a requirement
for relevant subject lines, an archive becomes little more than a BIG
trash can that people can root through, but with lots of resulting
frustration. Sort of like shelving books in a library randomly or by size!

 It's used for V8 style engines. Everything from 1976 and on. 450, 380, 500,
6.9 and 560 that I've seen. I know some newer diesels have hydraulic
lifters but all the ones I've worked on are mechanical.

However, I was talking about MB tools in general; how expensive they can be
and how little you might end up using them once you have them, while noting
that some are absolutely necessary.
Why would a diesel expert make such an assumption about hydraulic lifter
base setting tools and I thought you don't answer unsigned posts? lol

There's a small pin that rests on top of the lifter along with the tool and
a small red line is on the pin. If it shows red when you place it right you
need a thicker or thinner lash pad under the rocker.
Any noise at idle is usually from worn lifters, lash pad adjustment or low
oil pressure.
By the time all these things take their toll the cam lobes are usually worn
out so checking base settings is a waste of time.
Some people don't want to spend money on their cars just to fix a little
tick at idle if everything else is OK. Again, and in that case, more waste
of time to take any measurements.

However, you can't do the base settings without this rather expensive tool.

Re: [MBZ] Chain crimp tool

2005-08-19 Thread BenzBarn
Oh, I use them. Just not as important as I thought they would be.

My distributor tester? I USE that and it pays to have it around.

Mighty vac? Great tool anyone can use or should have.

Set of end wrenches? A necessity.

Master link crimper? The jury is still out on that one...

Re: [MBZ] Chain crimp tool

2005-08-19 Thread BenzBarn
Hey, I'm farm boy and you learn to make do. I used to rivet sections into
a mower knife all the time and this isn't that much different.

There's noting to it if you know what you're doing. Lay the chain in place,
slide the master link in, put the centre piece in and use vice grips and a
small nut over the pins to force the other link into place.
I use two hammers - one at the back of the link and the other to slowly peen
the link into place. A study of the factory crimp shows that it really
doesn't take much to peen it into place. I very seriously doubt that it
will ever come apart. If the smaller crimp from the tool holds it, so will
this method.

You guys might be surprised at just how many people do this but don't say
that they do. No doubt some are unaware of the tool but 500 bucks is too
much for it anyway. All you're really doing is riveting some metal -
something I learned how to do a long time ago.

What you see on eBay at that link is a cheap copy tool, not the
genuine Mercedes tool (which is made by Iwis, btw, the chain
manufacturer). The cheap eBay tool will not press on the middle plate
for the new OE style master links, the genuine tool (with appropriate
jaws) will. (The aftermarket master links have slip-fit center
plates,
btw.)

The genuine tool is sold in pieces... the main body, the crimp jaws,
the pressing jaws, etc. Even better, the aftermarket tool jaws are
NOT
compatible with the genuine tool (and vice-versa), although they LOOK
identical they are not. The genuine tool with double-row crimp jaws
is
somewhere around $300-$400 now, I forget exactly. Here's a photo of
the assorted pieces in the factory case:

BTW - I have a set of double-row crimp jaws for the aftermarket tool
that I don't need and would sell real cheap if anyone needs them!

That's quite a low price for that tool. With the proper jaws, the

tool

used to be well over $200 and that was before the dollar dropped in
value. I figured they would be $300-350 by now.
