[MBZ] Chinese SDS and the 97 E300

2011-07-24 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
Well I finally got the chinese SDS system working. I ended up
having to run it from a IBM x40 that has a docking station with a
real serial port. With the other computers I was trying it I was
using the PCI card serial port thing they sent, I guess that was
the problem. It connected to the car with no problem after that
and I was able to clear the tranny codes after replacing the
conductor plate. Drove the car to town, drives GREAT. Man its a
great running machine. I think Im going to take it to Maine
thursday. We driving about 3600 miles round trip on vacation to
Maine and was going to take the 99 E320, but really wanted to take
this. Will drive it all week up till time to leave to make sure
no other problems pop up. Maybe I am brave to take a car that I
will have only drove personally for a few days.

The only other remaining problem I have is the vacuum pump is dead
(the electric one under the back seat). I already knew about this
as the locks do not work. Also, the ACC is in default defrost
mode. After much research I discovered that the electric pump
under the seat also controls the ACC. I did have one of the small
wires broke off at one of the connectors, so I took the connector
apart and I think I might have it reattached. Pulled the pump out
and took it apart and it looks like parts of the board are burned.
Guess I need a new one. Anyone revived one of these things? I
think in the 210 they are a special deal, not like the old cars.
They have to be programmed with the SDS system if I am not
mistaken. I would pull the one out of the wrecked 99 E430 but its
got a different part number and I doubt it would work. I attached
some photos of the pump board

Most likely, that one looks _bad_. Looks to me like it got wet,
witness all the corrosion around the outside edges. That's probably
what actually killed it, tricked it into shorting out its own power
which cooked the diodes and the board in that area.

Looks like only a couple dollars' worth of parts, if you were
electronically handy, to try to resurrect it. (The irreplaceable
surface mount stuff looked fairly decent.) Assuming you can
tell what all the components are, how they are oriented, and
where the burned traces all went. (2-sided board only? Better
hope so!)

Tell us more about the Chinese SDS... where did you get it? Is it hacked MB
stuff, or something totally different?

Actually surface mount stuff is not too difficult to replace. I have
repaired a ThinkPad laptop motherboard by replacing a surface mount inductor
with my crappy $10 RatShack soldering iron.

Surface mount components aren't all that hard to replace if you have
a hot air soldering station, but one must have the correct
components, and these days that's very unlikely -- everything is a
custom part and once the design run is finished, they stop making them.

Maybe down the road that problem will be solved by some technology
that has yet to filter down to the hobbyist level?

Not many people in the mid-'80s could have predicted that twenty-five
years later analog electromechanical systems could be emulated by
microcontrollers costing pocket change. (I'm thinking of stuff like
the Unwired Tools replacement for the Chrysler ACC.)

Re: [MBZ] Chinese SDS and the 97 E300

2011-07-29 Thread Greg Fiorentino
As I had said, I was able to do so with just a cheap, low wattage soldering
iron. This obviously entails either knowing what the component is and being
able to source it, or having a spare junk source for parts (as I did in the
ThinkPad motherboard case).
