I wonder how well just a "simple" dc504 (tek) in totalize would work?

No, those are all simple counters. I think the correct type of counter
has one-shots to determine when it should stop counting pulses (during
the dead times) to frame off the digits, and the multiple, possibly
multi-digit, codes. I still think it's something that a laptop, or
a pda, could do easily, if somebody were interested enough to write
a little code.

A few years back I made an impulse counter with directions and part numbers
supplied on one of these lists. IIRC, it worked, but I could not find a
code sheet for the SDL. I'll look for it and the instructions, maybe
someone could get a use from it.

I tried on a 201 panel. No joy, nor could I use my old
HP 1630D logic analyzer to get anything. The bursts are
too quick, spaced too far apart. Drastically different
time scales, both important to the job.

Mega-sampling via something like a PC parallel port with
simple signal processing might do the job easily, though.

"impulse counter" - and just what is it counting? Would an
oscilloscope do as well for manually counting pulses?

My interpretation is the former---the flash alerts you to go hook up the
impulse counter to the special terminal behind the battery (somewhere near
the Klima relay, I think) and pull the code

Where does one get an

"impulse counter" - and just what is it counting? Would an
oscilloscope do as well for manually counting pulses?

I have wondered this as well! It would be nice to get around needing
another special M-B tool. I bet Jim C. knows.
