[MBZ] Hammie exhaust

2008-06-08 Thread Curt Raymond

Its 95 degrees out and this is the day I've got to work on the
exhaust... I have the week of July 4th off from work and I'd like to
use that week to get the car on the road, ie get it insured, registered
and inspected. I have to work next week and then I'll be in Burbank, CA
for 2 weeks for work so this is the only time.
The worst part of the job was cutting off the pipe the shop had welded
on. I wish they'd thought about what a bear it would be to get apart.
Of course a proper shop would have the car up on a lift and would cut
it off with a torch. I had the front end up on ramps and tried to cut
it off with a 4 1/2 angle grinder. The problem is a 4 1/4 angle
grinder can only cut about 1 and it was very hard to cut the top of
the pipe. Then of course I'd left a ragged cut so it was hard to get
the replacement in place and then I forgot to put the clamp on first so
I had to take the pipe back off to put the clamp on.
nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;
All in all it took me about 2 hours, remember this is the first exhaust
I've ever installed. Next time should be quicker because I'll buy a
bigger angle grinder or the pipe won't be welded The only issue is
I used the heavy duty rubber muffler hangers and when the car idles the
muffler rubs on a heat shield just above it. I think this is partially
caused by collapsed motor mounts. I'm not sure if I'm up to doing those
or if I'll have my Indy do them. nbsp; For him they're an easy job, not
big money...

2008-06-08 Thread OK Don
I don't think it will be a big job for you, if it's not one for him.
Engine mounts are loosen bolts, rlift enough to take weight off,
remove bolts, remove old mounts. insert new mounts, start bolts, let
the engine down, tighten bolts. - do one side at a time. I find
exhaust systems to be more work than changing engine mounts!

Did you get the photos I sent?

Engine mounts on nearly all MB chassis are a piece of
cake. I got so good at doing 123 mounts I had it down
to about 30 minutes a side, and most of that was setup
and tear down.

Just be sure to get a hex driver that goes on a 1/2
drive ratchet to break the bolt loose. And snap it,
don't just twist.
