Lol, if you don’t wash all the glycerol out, the residual hydroxide will make a
real mess of the injection system.

Not really a back yard production idea.

To make biodiesel you need methanol or ethanol, sodium hydroxide and vegetable
oil (used or unused). You mix the sodium hydroxide with methanol to make sodium
methoxide or with ethanol to make sodium ethoxide. Either one of these is then
mixed with the vegetable oil. The chemical reaction is a transesterification
reaction producing biodiesel and glycerol. The glycerol which is denser settles
to the bottom while the biodiesel floats on top. Further processing or washing
is done to enhance the purity of the biodiesel. It’s actually a very simple
straightforward process. I made some small batches many years ago for fun.

Re: [MBZ] I’m not even going to comment on this

2022-05-06 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
Biodiesel starts with mostly soybean oil or used cooking oil but may also
include other plant oils or animal fats. It is chemically altered by a process
called transesterification which separates the glycerin from the fat or
vegetable oil. After transesterification there are two products: glycerin which
is "washed" out and used for other purposes, and methyl esters (the chemical
name for biodiesel).

If you run your diesel engine on straight veggie/fryer oil (even if
cleaned/filtered) you are not removing the glycerin which can gum up your
injectors and injection pump. I can only speculate what it does to DPF and
other post-combustion emission control systems.

Commercial specification biodiesel is chemically refined vegetable oil made
to a specific DOT specification. The raw material may have been vegetable
oil [new or used] but the final material must meet the DOT specification to
be sold.
It also must meet DOD specification since the government is a major
contract buyer of spec biodiesel.
Additionally, all 50 states have state specifications biodiesel must meet.
What it is not, is "used fryer oil" just dumped into some diesel.
This link will take you to details of biodiesel standards, and if you care
to read for a few hours, other biodiesel details.
