Best friend in high school had a dad who was a very successful law practice.
Their house had the requisite “conversation pit’ of the time. He had a Pioneer
quad system professionally installed around the “pit”.

He lived close to school so we would often go over there at lunch and listed to
the few things that were released in quad, the one I can recall was “Victim of
Love” by the Eagles.

It was a bit of a gimmick. Sounded cool, but I don’t think it was practical.

On a related note, I saw a quadrophonic Pioneer receiver on FBM today, the one
that had the “oscilloscope” display to “tune” the system.

Re: [MBZ] I have never seen an old console stereo like this before

2022-12-23 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
Vintage Audio has far more than it’s share of BS, I personally think much of
the “high end” equipment is high end because it costs so much, and much of it
is pure fashion (or more bluntly, affectation, like using a monocle or wearing
spats).

This attitude is also a problem in the “hot rod” arena, where people tend to
argue endlessly about the work they have done for them. Actual hands on hot
rod guys are pretty rare now, and average 75 in age.

All part of the fun, I guess.

I’ve still got the stuff I bought in 1982, and after the umpteeth repair on the
amp, I’ve replaced it. Bad design (up side down main board runs WAY too hot).
Sonically it’s as good as anything out there, but then I don’t believe there
are all that many differences in audio equipment made past 1974 or so.

I do all my own electronics work, although I probably know just enough about it
to be dangerous.

I’m becoming an old grump.

Re: [MBZ] I have never seen an old console stereo like this before

2022-12-23 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
A buddy in my dorm had some money I think in a trust after his dad died, and he
was in the Natural Guard too so made some $$ from that. He was always upgrading
his hifi system.

Quadrophonic came out and he bought a system. Some huge receiver putting out a
couple hundred watts, a quad turntable, and 4 Heil Air Motion Transformer
speakers which were pretty huge. All this in like a 10x12 dorm room.

The speakers were truncated pyramids with the woofer in the bottom then this
vertical omnidirectional speaker in the top.

It was “surround” sound at the time and certain albums were remastered for the
four channel aspect. It sounded really cool but after awhile was kinda tedious.
The room was too small to really get the full effect but he got married and
moved into a campus apartment that had a larger living room and it was
marginally better.

I think the fad passed but he hung onto the system for quite some time. There
were never too many quad recordings but it played stereo quite well and there
was some “simulate” setting.

I have a pair of DCM Time Frames on the 70” TV in the family room. Thanks to MI
Mitch for pointing them out to me on eBay or CL (I can’t recall which one) so I
could snag them.

A Denon AV receiver drives them and handles all the switching between the TV,
Apple TV, BluRay and OTA inputs. Can’t recall the brand of subwoofer that’s
used, suffice to say it does the job.

We had a Bose surround sound system in a former house. I was never impressed
enough to bother with the surround sound stuff (much less, Bose speakers) so
it’s just basic stereo with a subwoofer here.

Agreed. You really have to have the right space for them and place them
properly. There’s a guy who lives close to me that has trafficked in planar
speakers of all flavors who I connected with at the time (he still does it, I
see his stuff on FBM occasionally). He gave me a lot of good advice and even
came by the house one day to make suggestions on placement. I really didn’t
have the space for them, but we got them sounding pretty good with a little
tinkering. The sound “space” you get out of them is amazing. There’s no
comparison with paper cone speakers.

That and they don’t do much for the low end, as well as requiring some serious
wattage to work. If you’re looking for theatrical surround sound that shakes
your seats they’re not the choice, or you augment them with a subwoofer.

People still pay stupid money for vintage audio. I dabbled some years back when
I came into possession of a Fisher receiver, a Soundcraftsman equalizer and
power amp and a pair of Magnepan planar speakers, but it didn’t take long for
me to realize that a car hobby would be far less expensive and probably more
fulfilling and practical. I re-capped the Fisher and sold it at a nice profit
along with all the other stuff. I will say the Magnepan speakers were pretty
amazing if they were in the right space. The average home listening room was
not the right space, however.

If people think Porsche enthusiasts are snobby and pretentious, they haven’t
been around hard core high end audio people. Oy!

Re: [MBZ] I have never seen an old console stereo like this before

2022-12-23 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
My dad was an electronics engineer (ITT Fort Wayne!). He was always screwing
around with our various tube TVs and some old tube radio that was fairly
ancient. I remember going with him to an “electronics” shop in town that had
millions of tubes in this old building, shelves floor to ceiling. It had a
coupla testers. That stuff was a total mystery to me but somehow he knew what
tubes were bad in the innards.

I remember he built a Heathkit fish finder at some point. Took forever but the
thing actually worked pretty well, at least it appeared to though I’m not sure
it increased fish production. You stuck the hydrophone or sonar or whatever
the sensor was in the water. It had a rotating disk with a Nixie tube on it or
something like that that would flash at the appropriate “depth” marking. It was
not particularly reliable though as he was always messing with it and at some
point I think he gave up on it.

My parents bought some huge console stereo thing back in the 60s that was about
6ft long. Magnavox I think, they were a big factory in town and some of his
college buddies worked there. Sounded like crap. I got a little Sony cassette
deck at some point and managed to hook it up (undocumented aux inputs!) and
between the hiss of the cassettes and the crappy speakers it also sounded like
shite. But it was fun. I think I had put a cassette deck in my car by then so
recorded albums to play in it.

I was in college and one summer I bought a nice Pioneer receiver and large
Advents (still using them for my TV sound after refining ages ago)) and he
groused and complained that the system “didn’t look nice.” I pointed out that
it sounded a lot better though and that was what mattered. He was not
convinced. I was home for the summer and set it up in the living room to listen
to. He refused to touch it until I came home one day and it was tuned to an
“easy listening “ FM station he liked. Too funny. I said something about it
that evening and he grumbled that well he thought he might try it out. Then at
Christmas he got me a really nice Pioneer turntable (I still have that and
should set it up too and play some vinyl) and I gave him a hard time that “it
didn’t look nice” and he allowed well he wouldn’t have to look at it much since
I would be away at school most of the time. I caught him playing his Mantovani
and Perry Como records on it though. I might still have those boxed up.

Damn this was all like 50yr ago now. The receiver has a bad channel on it and
cuts in and out or doesn’t work at all. Probably components have failed. It
started doing that after it was maybe 8yo. Nice unit though.

The great aunt’s Zenith played 78s, of which she had a bunch. I specifically
recall Doris Day’s rendition of “Put ‘em in a box, tie ‘em with a ribbon” being
one of her 78s.

It was a rare phonograph, even back then, that had all four speeds on it.

Re: [MBZ] I have never seen an old console stereo like this before

2022-12-23 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
Dad bought a number of Heathkits. He was not a particularly meticulous
assembler, and they often didn't work correctly. I would re-follow the
instructions,
and correct resistors, mis-installed transistors...

I bought an AM/SW radio, which you assembled in stages as a learning tool.
Was a very very good introduction to tube technology.

It's all mine, now. Still using the VTVM, though I replaced the battery with a
LM317 powered by the filament supply. The scope hasn't been used since
I got some Tektronix scopes. (I think I have six, now. Seven if you count the
one on the curve tracer.)

I found two more Heathkit VTVMs in the thrift stream, which I bought.
Basically if I find that kind of test equipment I buy it, though I did pass on
an NTSC generator.

Let's see, Heathkit tube stereo FM receiver, HH Scott stereo
tube amplifier, Knightkit VTVM (still have it and it works), Heathkit Twoer
(2 meter Ham transceiver), Heathkit Tunneldipper (still works), scratch
built (from schematics) 80, 40, 15 meter CW transmitter, my own design 57
watt RFamplifier for the transmitter, and too many small projects to
remember.
Now I just assemble black boxes to get the functionality I want - Ham
station (need/want a new transceiver) all the avionics in the airplanes,
etc.

Heathkit was pretty much gone by the time I was earning enough to afford
anything interesting. I built a few kits from Radio Shack as a kid.

My dad built a few things from Heathkit. I remember the parts spread out on the
kitchen table after dinner when he'd work on them. He was very meticulous and
had to have everything identifed and organized before he started. Mise en place
sort of thing.

Is it transistors or tubes? That's around the time that they started changing
over.

My dad always bought component stuff. We had his Scott integrated amplifier
(which was mono) as the amp for playing records in the family room. It was tube
based. At some point he bought a transistorized "receiver" and I guess he got
rid of the old Scott. It looked much like this one but may not have been this
exact model:

Yup. It’s called “propagation” and I used it to listen to all sorts of cool
stuff on my HeathKit SW receiver. It’s also why AM stations are required to
reduce power after sunset. If you were an ARRL member you could get propagation
“forecasts” that would give you an idea of the best days and times to listed
for distant stations or specific parts of the world.

AM and SW can travel farther (sometimes much farther) than FM especially at
night.

I had a little crystal radio kit at some point when I was a kid and at night
would sometimes pick up AM "blowtorch" stations hundreds of miles away.

Transistors, and/or capacitors. Tricky to fix if you're not familiar with the
particular circuit BS of the age.
Else everything just pops again. Tube gear is easier to work on. Particularly
difficult if your stuff dates
from the Germanium era. (Pre-silicon.)

Faux old. Here is a photo of the ultra-'modern' one I grew up with, a
Schenkendorf:

800 × 583

Lost in a house fire. Was a 4-band radio. FM Mono, but you could split the
audio
amplifier into two halves for stereo phonograph use. The other side of the
cabinet
is liquor storage. Mirror/glass/plush shiny fabric. Tres 50's chic! The
first piece of
furniture my parents bought when they married.

My grandparents bought a Philco console stereo in 1955 as a gift to themselves
when my grandfather finished building their home. It’s worked its way four
generations and is now in my newly married youngest daughter‘s home.
It sounds great.

I have 2 old console stereos. One is currently out in the garage and should
work. I paid $20 for it probably 30 years ago at a thrift store. Its a magnavox
and has a really fancy cabinet. The other one is an RCA Victor that was my
grandparents. It’s in my office and I would REALLY like to get it going. I
recall listening to it one day back in the late 80’s or maybe early 90’s and it
suddenly popped and has not worked since. I recall back when I was a kid my
grandmother periodically had to have the “stereo” guy come over and work on it.
Anyway in this case, I remember it was something about some transistors needed
to be replaced and she opted not to fix it. I wonder where the hell you could
find a person to work on these now days? I would gladly pay to have it fixed.

Back when your sound system was furniture.

My parents have an old radio/record player combo in their basement that is
similar though not as big. Someday when the house on the great northern estate
is more finished I'll take it up there. Hopefully the moisture of the basement
hasn't completely ruined the electrics. It was a good record player, did 16,
33, 45 and 78 rpm. Not stereo though.

I'd like to restore whats there and add speakers and a bluetooth receiver so it
could have a modern music player hidden inside.
