Re: [MBZ] I love the looks of the W108

2012-02-20 Thread LarryT
Yep, I feel the same way - spotted one from a mile off a few days ago,
turned around and followed it for a bit admiring the lines. I owned 2
W108s and both had their pro's and cons. One was a 69 280S and the
other a 72 280SE 4.5 - the 1st was reliable and got decent mileage - it
was our family cars for many years. The 280SE 4.5 was a dream to drive
especially on the interstate - it was designed to chew up continents
with ease and it did so wonderfully - unfortunately, stopping at the gas
station was not as much Joy! 15MPG on a good day and it was such a
pleasure to hear that 4.5 roar it was so tempting to hit the fast pedal
at every opportunity! -- Which made the MPG suffer even more

As far as '60s-early '70s Benzes go I would rather have a Heckflosse.
I'd use a nice one as a daily driver if they didn't have such
ineffective A/C and get such mediocre fuel economy in the gas
versions.

OTOH, the 108 280SE with the six, like the one in the original CL ad,
is pretty much worthless as a collectible, so I wouldn't feel bad
doing an drivetrain swap to something with equal power but a little
less thirsty. M103? OM606? 190e 2.3-liter four (whatever the M
number for that is)?

2011-08-15 Thread andrew strasfogel
I owned, restored and sold a W108 1970 280SE (Arabian ray/parchment) and a
W109 300SEL 3.5 (tobacco brown/cognac leather and burled walnut interior)
between 1986 and 1992, when they were considered VERY desirable. I
repainted each and did everyething else to make them concours award winners
in local and national MBCA events. I sold the 280SE for $10K to a CT doctor
and the 300SEL 3.5 sedan for $13K to a credit card company for use in their
promotional parades.

I am not so sure what each would bring in today's anemic sedan market. The
300SEL 6.3 is considered a muscle car and prices for those is stronger
than ever.

Since Kaleb can't seem to sell his W123s for more than scrap value, I'd
think OM-617s ought to be available for next to nothing, and no
electronics to worry about other than the glow plug circuitry. A W108
300D turbo?

It better be for $5K. The four-door sixes are neither particularly
desirable nor valuable, compared to the 4.5 V-8. Not that they're a
bad drive, just not collectible and probably never will be.
