Andrew? I think said that pre 84 the only way to time is drip. There are 
actually two other methods. One involves inserting a gauge or some sort 
of timing device between the injector and the IP. The other involves a 
clamp on device that senses the pulses in the line. Both allow timing 
with engine on.

Back when Ferret Instruments was here in Michigan, I bought their clamp on piezo 
device. Couldn't trigger it with my fine running but old 300SD. They sent me a 
more sensitive prototype to try, but that didn't do it either. I concluded that 
either my injectors were popping at a low pressure (but probably still a higher 
pressure than new non-turbo injectors) or the lines were too thick. The 5mm 
lines on the 60x engines are more failure prone, maybe they'd expand more than 
the 6mm lines on the 617.
