Re: [MBZ] Kaleb car rebuild, step 1

2009-12-10 Thread LarryT
I have owned my 66 MGB for over 40 years and am continually amazed by its
versatility. When we lived in far western Md where there's always lots of
snow, it had great snow manners as long and the snow wasn't more than 6" or
so deep. We towed a small sailboat (17') behind it also. Now, if I can
finish the restoration and get her back on the road I'll be happy! I'm
installing a new wiring harness and it's "interesting" trying to get
everything in the right place.

I'd never attempt to install a wiring harness in a MB, BTW (MB content)

When we rented the tow dolly the kid wouldn't rent it to me because Uhaul
thinks a Ranger is too small to tow a 190D (they're probably right) so I
quickly tried to convince the kid we'd take the dolly and put it on an
F150. He wouldn't let that fly so I just as quickly took another direction
and told him I was actually towing an MG B. That (surprisingly) flew just
fine.

Dwight complimented my quick thinking but actually I'd anticipated the
problem. The F150 was my backup plan, the MG B was my backup-backup
plan...

Reminds me of the time my Camaro spun a bearing 100 miles
from home. I tried to rent a dolly to go get it. No soap,
'too far'.

The next place they asked what I wanted it for, I told them
(the truth) that I was "just taking my Camaro to the engine
rebuilders."

Re: [MBZ] Kaleb car rebuild, step 1

2009-12-09 Thread R A Bennell
OK, that part I do understand. Seems a lot of effort to swap an engine though
before finding out what the damage is
on the one in there.

However, I do understand. I have a boat in that situation. Loud knock from the
lower end and I am guessing it will
need the crank and the whole works so I just bought a small block Chevy short
block assembly used that should swap
in quickly. Will see what the damage is in due course but likely going to be
bad. Boat is a bit easier to swap
however as once the doghouse is removed, it is pretty much wide open.

Why don't you tear it down and see what it needs? Might not be so bad as you
think. If it turns out to be worse,
you won't have wasted much effort.

Talked to my Indy today, asked him how he felt about an engine swap vs tearing
down the engine in the car which had
broken its timing chain.
He said he really preferred the swap and figured it'd be cheaper too.

I agree, so now I need to see about an engine...
