Re: [MBZ] Low power, stalling issues: '87 300TD

2009-10-21 Thread Dillon, Meade M CIV SPAWARSYSCEN-ATLANTIC, 53310
No problems today, only thing I did was change the main fuel filter. I
consider this solved, although I still plan to change the tank strainer
eventually (have had the parts for several years now).

Guy here at the office stood and watched while I changed the filter
yesterday during lunch break. He was amazed at (1) the size of the
filter and (2) how easy it was. I pointed out a few other things that
were easy to work on this car, I think he was impressed. When I told
him the car has over 300k miles, he was REALLY impressed.

May as well check the air filter - if seriously clogged it will act as you
describe.

Cold enough to gell fuel?

45 deg F, so I don't think that is it.

Gasoline in the tank?

Not likely, unless the diesel pump at last station was connected to
contaminated tank. However, I had 400 miles on the tank with no
symptoms.

Those are outside chances. Clogged fuel filters and/or air leaking

into >the fuel system are at the top of the list, assuming that the tank

Air leak is a good thought, but would it get better and worse? I can
imagine a leak can change with temperature, but it started and ran fine
for 10 minutes when cold, then suddenly got worse, got a fresh tank of
fuel and was better but not 100%.

If the fuel filter doesn't do it, I'll swap the supply/return lines to
test the strainer.

Check for leaking fuel lines up by the lift pump -- there are a couple
o-rings there that can go bad and leak air into the fuel system, and by
now the original fuel lines are probably leaking if they have not been
replaced. Any fuel on the outside of the lines means they are cracked,
and will leak air in under suction.

There is more suction with the tank low

Cold enough to gell fuel?

45 mph, she started surging and losing power, until soon I had the
accel. floored to maintain speed. At next stop she tried to stall out,
but I was able to keep the engine going and diverted to the nearest
station with diesel.

Gasoline in the tank?

Those are outside chances. Clogged fuel filters and/or air leaking
into the fuel system are at the top of the list, assuming that the
tank wasn't actually empty. Clogged tank strainer is also on the

I'll take a peak under the rear, sure hope I haven't already collapsed
the tank. I doubt it though. I've been suspicious of the strainer for
awhile, car had some microbial bloom when I got it.

If the tank vent is clogged, your fuel capacity might be 12.7 gallons.
Does the tank look like a deflated football?

Otherwise, replace the filters, and if that doesn't work, clean the
strainer next time you're low on fuel.

[MBZ] Low power, stalling issues: '87 300TD

2009-10-20 Thread Dillon, Meade M CIV SPAWARSYSCEN-ATLANTIC, 53310
Dieselvolk,

My 124 wagon started acting up during the ride to work in the cold and
dark this a.m. After only about 10 minutes and while driving at about
45 mph, she started surging and losing power, until soon I had the
accel. floored to maintain speed. At next stop she tried to stall out,
but I was able to keep the engine going and diverted to the nearest
station with diesel. Speed got slower and slower, no bucking or missing
just really low power and would not idle sometimes. Hard to maintain 30
mph.

I was thinking low fuel condition, as the gauge is really really
optimistic lately and perhaps the reserve fuel warning light had
malfunctioned, but she only took 12.7 gallons. However, when I opened
the fuel cap there was a bit of a whoosh. Filled up, got back on the
road and all was fine EXCEPT at full throttle and when climbing large
hills. While crossing to the two really big steep bridges to get to
work, at WOT the surging was back and power was lower. Opened the fuel
cap again when I got to work; there was no whoosh.

So, what thinks you? I'm thinking either clogged fuel filter, clogged
tank strainer, clogged tank vent, or some combination of the three.

I have a fuel filter with me, I'll probably try to change that over my
lunch break.

Very respectfully,
