I use simple green diluted 2 to 1 on most of the engine and undiluted if you
have any really grungy spots. Rather than using really high pressure water, I
just use a small soft brush to scrub any particularly nasty areas (at least
that I can reach). Like others have mentioned pressure washers have too much
pressure. I just use a garden hose with a cheapo gun with a bunch of spray
patterns. I usually cover up the some of the more vital electronics with a
towel. I don't try to prevent them from getting damp, just try not to spray
water directly on them.

I saw another trick the other day that worked great. Rinse the engine with
cold clear water. Let sit and dry for at least 15 min. Start engine and idle
allowing it to dry. Then, shut off engine and use WD-40 to spray everything.
Since its water displacement it will help dry out any electronics that are
still damp and it leaves a natural clean looking shine (not too shiny).

A pressure washer is not a good idea as they usually have high enough
pressure to damage gaskets and blow water right past rubber seals into the
engine. I have witnessed motorcycle engines fail because the owner liked to
keep them spotless with a pressure washer after each ride.
A car wash is generally nowhere near the same pressure and poses a lot
less risk. Just use a little common sense and there isn't much on a 300d
that you will damage with a car wash.

You don't? I have always been wary of washing car engines with water
under any significant pressure. I seem to remember that BMW at some
point in the late '80s or '90s issued a service bulletin that strongly
recommended against engine washing because of the potential for water
being forced into connectors, sealed electronic modules, etc.

You don't? I have always been wary of washing car engines with water
under any significant pressure. I seem to remember that BMW at some
point in the late '80s or '90s issued a service bulletin that strongly
recommended against engine washing because of the potential for water
being forced into connectors, sealed electronic modules, etc.

I killed a few relays doing weekly underhood washings of a Chrysler product.
Unlike my similar vintage MBZ, it did not have the relays in a covered box.

Mitch.

 Nile
 Country Club...

Except that what worked last night doesn't today. I'll fix it. I hope.

It works for me. All the cars look totally droolworthy, especially the two

 ...Rain is in the forecast.

 Good old Murphy's law

Turned out no rain except a very light drizzle early. Sun and 75 degrees.

But I screwed up and missed third place people's choice because I didn't
turn in my own ballot. 1st was a pristine metallic blue SLK55. Don't know what
was 2nd. A lot of nice older cars were present out of the 90-some cars on
the field.
