No Indy. Family is there, but we bailed from Indy last year. Had a house there
for roughly six months, sold out and made a little money in the process.

Interesting insight, Bob.

It was a real pleasure doing this job in my “happy place” (Flagstaff) as the
conditions were comfortable and I had plenty of tools and space to work in. Had
it been in FL I would have been far less interested in doing it, as the garage
there is smaller and somewhat cramped and as you well know, the climate makes
it really unpleasant this time of year. The garage in Flagstaff is far from
perfect, but it’s much better than my Florida garage, so much so that I just
like going out there and trying to find things to do.

I haven’t had the chance to enjoy the fruits of my labor just yet as I haven’t
had a reason to go out. Between attempts to limit driving due to the fuel costs
and not having a reason to go anywhere, it just got parked in the garage for
now. Mrs. Dan and I are going out after work today to pick out some tile for a
backsplash in the kitchen, so that will be the first run after replacing the
mounts. I’m looking forward to it.

I have to admit that I really enjoy the ML550 that’s based in Tampa. The
creature comforts make it such a nice ride it’s a real joy to drive. While I
want to use the W211 E320 there for daily driving, I just can’t help myself
when it comes time to head out and I end up in the ML550. The first tank I got
around 16 mpg, compared to the E320 in the low 20s, but again, the pure
enjoyment of driving the ML550 pushes me over the top when it comes to a
decision of what to drive…

I have a truck to sell before I can pick something up that I can get my hands

However, every time I with on the AC in the big ole Dodge I do get a bit of

Having now done this twice, once on the ML500 and once on the ML350, it’s
equally difficult, but not bad.

The mounts are cheap, like $32 or thereabouts from Mercedes. Don’t buy
aftermarket mounts!

Do the passenger side first, as it’s the easiest.

1.) Take out the fender liner

2.) Remove the nuts from the mount - 1-18mm on the top, 2-16mm on the bottom.
You can get on the top nut with a ratchet, the bottoms ones with a ratchet and
some extensions. Make note of the heat shield on the top of the mount, and the
presence of a flat washer under the top nut.

3.) With a floor or bottle jack, use some 2” x 2” boards to clear the
crossmember and sway bar to jack up the engine using the oil pan - be sure to
use a long board to distribute the weight across the pan. Take the plastic
cover off the engine first, then disconnect the air cleaner outlet to the MAF
so the engine can move upward. Jack the engine up (gently) until it “tops” out.
Watch the back of the engine and the coolant reservoir as you do this so you
don’t break anything.

4.) Disconnect the battery, as you’re working in close proximity to the starter
and alternator, and there are exposed terminals with battery voltage on them in
this area. Using a star socket, remove the four bolts holding the engine
support to the engine.

5.) With the engine support loose, lift the mount out of the frame.

6.) Place the new mount into position, making note of the “Front” marking on
the mount so that it is facing the front of the vehicle.

7.) Reverse the order of work and you’re in business.

Differences between the right and left side mounts:

1.) The left side mount requires the removal of a heat shield as soon as you
remove the fender liner. Three 10mm nuts and the heat shield lifts out the top
of the engine compartment.

2.) The bottom nuts on the left engine mount are a little tougher to get to.
You’ll need a 3/8 universal and some long extensions to get to them. There is a
hose in the way of one, but it can be easily pushed out of the way.

3.) An 18mm ratcheting box end wrench is a big time saver in removing the top
nut. It’s in a tight space and will take a while with a standard offset
combination wrench. No room for a ratchet/socket on this one.

4.) The engine support star bolts are harder to get to on the left side, but
can be done with a 3/8” universal and some extensions. There is an additional
star bolt that goes through the AC compressor and into the engine support. This
has to be removed in order for the support to move around and clear the mount.

An hour for the right side is about average and two hours for the left if
you’re not in a hurry.

this area. Using a star socket, remove the four bolts holding the engine
support to the engine.

5.) With the engine support loose, lift the mount out of the frame.

6.) Place the new mount into position, making note of the “Front” marking on

7.) Reverse the order of work and you’re in business.

Differences between the right and left side mounts:

1.) The left side mount requires the removal of a heat shield as soon as you

This
has to be removed in order for the support to move around and clear the mount.

you’re not in a hurry.

Thanks!

For those who have done motor mounts on older MBs, later model motor mounts are
a major challenge. The W163 is especially unpleasant because you have to
replace them form the wheel well, not underneath the car.

[MBZ] ML350 Motor Mounts

2022-06-22 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
Did the left side this afternoon, under two hours from start to finish, not
bad. I did much the same on this one as I did on the right side - I loosened
the engine support that sits on the top of the mount to get enough room to R
the mount. Made it pretty simple, not nearly the pig of a job it is when I did
it on my last ML.

Left side mount was totally trashed. Completely collapsed and the top bolt and
anchor was torn away from the rubber, so it was resting directly on the steel
frame of the mount.

Car idles like “buttah” now. All I have left to do is order some of the plastic
nuts that hold the fender liner in place, as the last person who was in there
decided that they weren’t important and left some of them off. Idiot.
