Re: [MBZ] Master cylinder
If you have a NAPA nearby I would get one there. You can look at it before you walk out, and if there are problems with it you will have someone local to deal with and a hassle-free return/exchange. Autozone, Pep Boys, and others also warranty what they sell but they are a lower tier in terms of the quality of the parts and the knowledge/professionalism of the staff, at least in my experience. Saving $10 over the expected lifetime of a master cylinder is meaningless, regardless of the age of the car. FWIW I bought a Dorman manifold crossover for my '95 Crown Vic a while back. It was good quality. Things change over time. [MBZ] Master cylinder
The brake master cylinder seems to be failing on my old toada sienna family truckster. This vehicle is too old to justify the price of an OE one, so I’m considering a rebuilt or aftermarket cylinder. Most parts places and web sites seem to carry the same brands of aftermarket cylinders like - Centric, Dorman, Cardone, Raybestos. Can anybody offer experience/advice about selecting among these brands? Why would you buy a rebuilt one when a new one costs ~$10 more? [MBZ] Master Cylinder failure
When the MC gave up on my 115 I was sitting at a red light and the car crept forward. I thought I was having a senior moment or something and had just not held my foot on the brake pedal hard enough. Then the light turned and off I went. About a block later, I stepped on the brake pedal and it started slowly going down further than it should have. At that point I realized I had and issue that needed to be addressed so I turned around and drove it home and into the garage before it got any worse. There were no signs of leaking fluid so I assumed it was the MC that had given up. I ordered a kit to repair it but that didn't work out. The kits originally came with a thin plastic tube that permitted one to slide the plunger in without ruining the o rings. This kit did not come with that and I was unable to find anything else that would work. I didn't really want to run the risk of damaging the o rings and having to redo the whole job so I just ordered a rebuilt unit and installed it. No further issues. The washer fluid tank is a major PITA to replace. Ironic that they’re so brittle when they age, causing even a casual glance at one to shatter it. Re: [MBZ] Master cylinder
How much is a new MC? Last time I bled brakes, following a MC replacement in a hotel parking ramp, I bought 20 feet of clear hose (fish tank air line, about $10 from Walmart pet department) and then ran a line from right rear caliper bleed screw back up to MC reservoir. Open bleed, pump the brakes until no more air bubbles, repeat at the other three calipers, done. I think I also needed a small can of new brake fluid. Pedal does not go to the floor. Just too much travel. When I bled it this last time I basically ran a whole large bottle of fluid thru it. Some of the calipers took a while before I started seeing bubbles in the clear tube. After they quit I let it run for a while after before closing the bleeder. Always thought bad master cylinder was a slowly sinking pedal. If pedal travel is too far, the pushrod on the pedal needs to be adjusted? Spongy or pedal to the floor is air in the lines. When you say "lines" do you mean at the master cylinder? There is a line on either side of the sensor. Cracking the lines there might re-center the pin. Bleeding the brakes did not solve the problem. If the light is off when unplugged, presumably the sensor is normal-open and closes to send a warning. That would suggest that if there are multiple sensors they would be wired in parallel meaning unplugging one of them would not effect the others. Did the new master cylinder include a new sensor? Does the dash light still come on for the self test when starting the engine? (I'm presuming the 115 dash lights test even though the glow and start are not done with the key) ___ I assume (always dangerous to do that) that the 76 115 300D may be more like the 123 in any event as the earlier 115 models did not have the pressure imbalance sensor. You are correct that there are two sensors - 1 for pressure imbalance and the other for low fluid. They are wired together in the sense that the low level sensor has 2 wires for it and the pressure sensor has one lead that appears to come on from the first. Like an oil pressure gauge, I assume (there it is again) that it grounds out when it puts the light on. The bebuilt unit came with neither sensor. The level sensor is built into the resevoir and is not removable. I have not checked to see if it works. I could do so while bleeding the brakes as the level will no doubt go down. I am not pressure bleeding but just opening the wheel cylinder bleed screws while someone else steps on the pedal for me. I believe the issue to be with the pressure sensor as unplugging the lead from it puts the light out. It has a small white plastic pointer on it and I believe that the pointer will be moved one way or the other by the plunger in the body of the master cylinder when it is moved one way or the other by the pressure from the main plunger. One thought that comes to mind right now is that it might be in order to loosen it off enough to bleed it too just in case there is some air in there. Will try that tonight. If that does not work and it is still wonky after I bleed the brakes, I will remove it temporarily and test with a meter to see if it is grounded out all of the time. Re: [MBZ] master cylinder
Randy, I think Philip is on to something. If you have your owner's manual there should be an explanation for that light, and I think it is a simple float sensor to warm of low brake fluid. The same light may also indicate when the parking brake is applied, which may be a simple switch at the parking brake pedal mechanism: maybe that is the cause of your flickering light? -- Max Dillon Charleston SC '87 300TD '95 E300 On August 24, 2015 4:04:33 PM EDT, fmiser via Mercedes wrote: >> Randy wrote: >> >> One issue that remains, and I had hoped would be solved in >> all of this is the brake warning light on the dash still >> does not wish to go out. [MBZ] master cylinder
I finally got a rebuilt unit and replaced the master brake cylinder in my 115 300D yesterday afternoon. I bench bled the master cylinder before installation and now have a good solid pedal. Still need to bleed the wheel cylinders - hopefully this evening so I can drive it again. Must be 6 weeks or so since my problem developed. Took a month to get the rebuild kit and then I could not get it back together in a manner that I thought acceptable so I finally ordered a rebuild. One issue that remains, and I had hoped would be solved in all of this is the brake warning light on the dash still does not wish to go out. I believe it to be the sender that warns of an uneven pressure between front and back. It was a problem before and I have had the sensor unplugged for a while. When I dismantled the old unit to clean it, that part was pretty gummed up so I thought the new one should be clean and make it functional again. Maybe my sensor is damaged or inoperative? I won't get too far into it until I bleed the wheels and drive it a bit but I would rather have it intact than unplugged. Anyone know anything much about this? Advance Auto has remans here for a little over $100. The same at Autozone. The MBUSA part is around $220. Amazingly, Advance also has brake boosters for this car for barely $100. Re: [MBZ] Master cylinder changing/bleeding
The reservoir actually has a round volume beneath the rear sensor, and a squarish volume beneath the front sensor, with what appear to be floats in them that come up to the vent caps (2 of these next to the sensors). >From what I can see looking in the cap hole, they look like they are not connected to the main reservoir, but there might be some holes in there somewhere. It does not look like there are two chambers with a notch (like on my other vehicles). This is why I was wondering how to fill those chambers in there. I did pump the pedal some and it was real squishy, so will have to get out in daylight in the morning and bleed them. I have used the Mityvac to do that too, it works pretty well..All the hoses going here and there for bleeding and collecting are annoying as one always comes loose, or out of the collector bottle, or twists up on something else... I was thinking to make a pressure bleeder, I have an old Nalgene bottle and some barb fittings and hose somewhere, use a bit of compressed air to push the fluid. Maybe next time. Removing and replacing the MC and hooking it all back up would have taken about 15 min except for that last brake line fitting that took a half hour to get lined up to catchhhh. --R [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: > Rich, > > You can fill both chambers by filling the area below the cap, when it > reaches a certain height, fluid will flow through the barrier notch into the > rear > chamber. Re: [MBZ] Master cylinder changing/bleeding
The cap opening shows both chambers on some, but I think on that one (sort of triangular dual tank?) you just fill up the front one until it overflows into the rear chamber. Make SURE the rear chamber always has fluid in it, else you just pump air into the lines. I use a MitiVac to bleed the brakes -- works great and once you have fluid in the lines, they will all gravity bleed just by opening the bleeder with a hose slipped over it.
