Re: [MBZ] Missing half-moon key slot on new Bosch alternator

2012-01-27 Thread Gerry Archer
I put a hex key socket/impact wrench on the shaft end, and a box end
on the nut. Got it up pretty close to 80 ft/lb and stopped when (cheap)
allen key in end of shaft began to strip.

Think maybe the 4 year old battery is bad since the cell hydrometer
readings won't go up after charging a few hours. Getting a new battery
this PM.

Thanks,
Gerry

Yeah, I went through the same thing. The answer was to just put the
pulley on and tighten the nut. Your number of 80 is about right. I
got mine as tight as i could, and it has been ok.

I use the rattle-wrench to remove and tighten the alternator pully nut.
I've had one (FLAPS-branded) rebuild come with a keyed shaft; the
Bosch rebuilds don't in my experience. Doesn't seem to really matter
in practice.

Yes, I have. I have not seen a key on a Bosch alternator for a Mercedes for
a long time now. Taking the pulley off the old shaft will tell you that you
don't need a key ---

[MBZ] Missing half-moon key slot on new Bosch alternator

2012-01-26 Thread Gerry Archer

A new, factory, (not rebuilt), Bosch alternator for an '83 300D
came with no half-moon key slot in the shaft. All else is the same
as the defective alternator.

Factory booklet that came with alternator simply says to be sure
and use cars recommended torque on nut with no mention of key.

In 65+ years of messing with cars, this is the first alternator/generator
shaft I've seen with no half-moon key.

Anyone else encountered this?

If Bosch is gambling on saving the cost of one machining operation,
it might be a good idea to put some sort of "glue" on the shaft/pulley
just in case. Would "stop-nut" allow the pulley to be removed the
next time an alternator is needed?

Thanks,

Gerry
