Gut mechanical instinct says, use a factory pump, with factory warranty,
all factory accessories, like belts and hoses [new clamps]. Also, check
block drains and freeze plugs very carefully, along with doing a very
complete block and cooling system flush, to remove any residual of tired
coolant, [yes, even the heater core].
Experience has taught me that if a water pump starts leaking, it is a
symptom of other possible internal corrosion.
Naturally, only replace coolant with the right factory stuff.

The cheapest I have found the water pump kit is $252, but I’d have to
ship it. I can drive to the ginormous Cummins dealer near my home and
snag one for $282.

What else should I consider changing out whilst I monkeying around in
there? Of course I will inspect the belt and replace if it looks
sketchy, but what about the thermostat? Idler pulley?

How difficult is it to change the water pump on that engine?

I would think the worst case scenario would be that the replacement does

not last as long if you buy aftermarket.

Have you tried looking online for an OEM with a discounted price?

That’s generally my calculation. How many hours to change the part, how much do
I save on the aftermarket part, and how much is my time worth if I have to do
the job again if the cheaper part fails? “Lifetime” warranties are great, but
they don’t pay for the labor.
