The boxer diesel produces 148 horsepower at 3,600 rpm and 258
pound-feet of torque at just 1,800 rpm. The engine is capable of
  60.5 mpg.

As far as availability, sounds like not anytime soon. They won't
bring it in unless they can sell it in all 50 states and it does not
 meet California emissions.

No, but it's hard to ride in an engine, and a car uses more fuel. ;-)
Seriously, I suspect that mpg figure is for a car that is small and 2wd,
not anything Subaru has sold in the USA in the last ten years. If a 320
CDI can get 40+ on the hwy, a little commuter car should do 60 easy.

Still, hard o believe an engine with that kind of efficiency is being

little high on some percentage of something, it's only burning 1/4 the
fuel of an SUV

Boy, don't I wish that I could believe the market is controlled by what the
consumer wants.

Unfortunately, I feel - no evidence - just feel, that the consumer wants
what he/she is aware of/presented with.

The radio was a fantastic thing until BW television made an appearance.
Black and White television was absolutely wonderful until Color became
available. VHS tapes were all the rage until DVDs became the consumer norm.
Now there is Blu Ray (or something like that) HD etc.

Albeit (did I do it right?)LOL full of commercials broadcast
television served many generations now in the near future if you don't have
digital you cannot even watch televiosn.

I think it's more of a chicken and egg sort of thing.

I don't think people choose that they want a big inefficient vehicle, its
feature and capabilities are marketed to their insecurities and they
decide they need it to keep up with everyone else.

That's not human nature, reallythat's manipulation

If you have a choice between a range of vehicles, none of which is actually
getting the sort of economy that they are capable of, you learn quickly that
fuel economy is NOT an issue. It is! It seems that it's only when you hit
people where it hurts, in the wallet, that they wake up from their wasteful
stupor.

If cars in the USA got better fuel mileage, there would be less
reason for fuel. If they were predominantly diesel, it would be
easy(er) to feed them with bio-diesel.

But then there would be no reason to got to war! Where would we
be then?

Ooops. That's getting into politics.
