I have not purchased in three years, so am not sure how much change to fabric
has taken place. The trousers are made in a host of nations and I have found
some plants do a poor job with QC. The Canadian made 501 shrinks are top
quality, with thick material, sturdy stitching and tight button holes. Only
thing to have “failed” was the label after five years.

Once the jeans get super soft and fade out at the thighs, I demote them to
“work” duty where they are assaulted with motor oil, chemicals, and yard work.
Even then it takes a few years for that “fashion” distressed cuts to show up.
I am too large for the resulting britches to fit the fashion forward set in
Japan

I wear those, but wonder if I got a counterfeit pair last time (bought
online from Walmart.com, which I assumed was safe from that). Either
that or they may have started cutting back on the fabric quality.

Squatting to pick something up, the entire crotch ripped open. Not on a
seam, in the middle of the fabric. Glad I was not going commando at the
time! That pair were only a few months old when that happened.

My scraper is 1.5 " - but as you say, a very useful tool. I am usually
carrying a screw driver, torch igniter, pliers, and a pair of aviation
snips. Other tools rotate depending on the project at hand. I've found the
Duluth carpenter pants the best so far for working in the hangar/shop. They
fit well yet are loose, and stretch - never limiting movement.

70s prices for Levis were like $20 or more, I remember my mom would let
me get one pair a year.  A buddy of mine who was in a 9kid family
borrowed a pair once in high school to go to a dance as he had nothing
like that (and we were amazingly the same tall skinny size) and he was
in absolute heaven.  I thought he was going to cry when he had to give
them back.

But now you can buy a pair of Levis for about the same price almost
50years ( wait, what?) on, so that says something about offshoring,
onshoring, quality, etc. I guess.  I used to work with a guy who had
been CFO for Levis when they were based in Seattle or somewhere out that
way, he was an a*e but he had some interesting stories about that
particular rag business.

Actually, I thought the cheaper Wrangler cuts have been made from better
cloth the past 10-15 years.  There was a while when they would tear
easily, but the ones I've had lately have not.  They usually wear
through at the thighs. Pre-2000 they'd wear through at the knees.  The
thin denim is in the Key Bibs.   It seems to keep getting thinner.  But
I like all the pockets for trades work.

They fit better (more human shaped but less efficient use of material), the

quadruple stitched. And those 1980 Wranglers were better than today's Wranglers
IMO.

Now I'll just wear $20 Wranglers or $30 Dickies or sometimes Carhardts.
I buy the Wranglers when they're on sake for $15 or less. They're fine for
casual wear, but they snag/tear easily if you're around exposed nails or
thorns. Wore a brand new pair to my parents house, mom need a light bulb

I didn't notice her ladder had a small nail head sticking out, and poked a hole
in my Wranglers. I darned it and still wear them 2 years later, but I don't
think Carhardts would have ripped in the first place.
Wouldn't buy crappy imported $50 Levis even if I hadn't started boycotting
Levi/Dockers/etc in the 1990s.

Re: [MBZ] OT: We talked about socks, how about blue jeans?

2019-12-24 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
Wranglers fit/feel better. El Mercado de Wal sells them cheap enough. Levi lost
its way ages ago. Try carpenter pants, the fabric is a bit thicker and the fit
is looser (loser) and they have the pencil/tool pocket and hammer loop for
added utility. If you want to look like an old geek cargo pants are great!

I have some bibs somewhere I need to dig out.

All this is predicated on not giving a sh*t about being a fashion statement.
Except maybe if you wear proper boots, then you might need to rethink all that
a bit.

Re: [MBZ] OT: We talked about socks, how about blue jeans?

2019-12-24 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes

40 years ago, $20 Sedgefield (Wrangler's premium brand) were substantially
better than $12 Wranglers.
They fit better (more human shaped but less efficient use of material), the
material was heavier and more densely woven, and the seams were triple or
quadruple stitched. And those 1980 Wranglers were better than today's Wranglers
IMO.

Now I'll just wear $20 Wranglers or $30 Dickies or sometimes Carhardts.
I buy the Wranglers when they're on sake for $15 or less. They're fine for
casual wear, but they snag/tear easily if you're around exposed nails or
thorns. Wore a brand new pair to my parents house, mom need a light bulb
changed.

Mitch.

Re: [MBZ] OT: We talked about socks, how about blue jeans?

2019-12-24 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I used to be a Levi’s guy, as I had an uncle that worked for them his whole
life and often passed me freebies as I was his sample size when I was younger.
I noticed maybe 10-15 years ago that the fabric was noticeably lighter and that
they didn’t wear nearly as long - but the prices weren’t any different.

At that point I went to name-brand Wranglers and have been far more pleased at
the durability and longevity.

I wear jeans for working, not a fashion statement. If they’re going to wear out
prematurely, I’ll find others that won’t.

2019-12-23 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
Real Merkuns wear Blue Bell brands:  Wrangler, Rustler etc. or bib
overalls.  (or carrhart if you want to flash you used to have cash)
I wear wranglers.   They have "outlet" stores all over.  Or you can buy
the cheap ones without the W on the back pockets at places like wallyland.
I figure I get about 1 year out of a $17 pair.   When I was in HS,
Wrangler supported the rodeo circuit, and Billy Minnick had his
signature on Wrangler cowboy cut and boot cut.  They also fit well.

Real men wear wranglers, (or carrhart)   Pencil neck geeks and q ueers
in NY and SF wear le vis

For Bibs, I've been getting Key, because that is the only brand I can
find.  About $34, and they also last about 1 year of everyday wear.  THe
new ones are Sunday Bibs, the next newest are Saturday Bibs.  Then there
are Everyday Bibs, and when patched they become undercar work bibs.

I've also had wrangler Khakis, and their tan work jeans that are sorta
competing with carrhart.  The lightweight ones wear also about a year
for $14-15.   I've not bought the heavy weight ones tht really compete
with carrhart.

I will never buy anything made by Le vi, the commie lovers.   When they
made a big deal of announcing they would not donate to the Boy Scouts,
20 yrs ago or so, I swore off their overpriced crap.  I never bought
their overpriced jeans anyway.   They could have quietly quit supporting
BSA, but rather than that they attempted to inflict as much damage as
they could to BSA.  Screw them!

I never could justify the price of carrhart, but have considered them
from time to time.

I have had different brands of blue jeans with various
lengths of usable life and comfort of fit.

Have any of you found a particular brand to wear longer
than others? Fit better than others?

How about places to buy them? Are the ones sold at Wally World worse
quality than those sold at other places? How about Tractor Supply?

I've had very good fit and wear from the LL Bean jeans, but I bought them
before the current generation cut quality to increase profits. I don't know
that they are any good anymore, but then again, since these are still going
strong after ten or more years, I don't really know.
