[MBZ] OT CONELRAD Alert!

2011-11-09 Thread Rich Thomas
OK I just heard it, and it was definitely a CONELRAD alert, it even had
the same scratchy, staticky, barely understandable
AM-during-bad-sunspot-activity lo-fi minimal-modulation quality that the
CONELRAD alerts did back when. Maybe it was from a time warp channeling
50s transmissions to duck and cover.

One might think that in these days of digital communications and various
techniques for sending information over the airwaves, that it would
sound like something vaguely understandable? Or maybe that is precisely
the purpose of this technique, to survive The Big One? But will it come
this time from the commies?

No but I did see JFKennedy drive by when I was like 8 yr old. They made
us schoolkids stand out by the street waving flags when he went by.
This was probably not long after he had been elected, I think I was in
2nd grade. I also remember the day he was shot, my teacher was really
affected by it when it was announced. Not sure any of us kids knew
exactly what it was about, but I do remember learning the word
assassination the next couple of days. Weird times. I vaguely recall
my dad making some comments about ol' Lyndon...

I am encouraged by the CONELRAD alert today, looking forward to these
folks running my health care.

Re: [MBZ] OT CONELRAD Alert!

2011-11-09 Thread Max
Should have said Truman vice Eisenhower, here's the Wikipedia entry:

CONELRAD (Control of Electromagnetic Radiation) was a method of emergency
broadcasting to the public of the United States in the event of enemy attack
during the Cold War. It was intended to serve two purposes; to prevent Soviet
bombers from homing in on American cities by using radio or TV stations as
beacons, and to provide essential civil defense information. U.S. President
Harry S. Truman established CONELRAD in 1951. After the development of
intercontinental ballistic missiles reduced the likelihood of a bomber attack,
CONELRAD was replaced by the Emergency Broadcast System on August 5, 1963,
which was later replaced with the Emergency Alert System in 1997; all were
administered by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

I hadn't started school yet, but was marooned in the house as I had the mumps

Other than that I don't recall a whole lot about it.
