I investigated this one a couple of days ago. Not sure why it’s relisted. Don’t recall the reason for rejecting it after corresponding with the seller. Probably because of miles. Found a 2002 ML320 on the local FB Marketplace. Has BAS light and the owner says it needs a yaw sensor, even had the part number. Incorrect, the late 70s GM diesels we're junk. By '82 they had figured it out. Re: [MBZ] One For Dan P
Agree wholeheartedly! I had a 78 Malibu w/a smallish V8 - the engine (not the transmission) ran great but all the other bits of the car had been "cheaped to death" as you described, I especially disliked the fasteners - mostly flat sheet metal w/a little hole and a twisted piece of metal in the hole to grab the bolt (barely). they always seemed too strip way to easily. That car was a good car, but without the cheapy-ness it would have been much better. I'm sure there were more things I disliked but it's been 30+ years.. ;-) LarryT On 07/24/2018 9:08 PM, Peter Frederick via Mercedes wrote: Another GM idea cheaped to death ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
Re: [MBZ] One For Dan P
Two problems with those GM engines: original rear main bearing design was grossly inadequate and the fuel filters were totally inadequate for the quality of the fuel available (read very poor). Very small amounts of water in the fuel would trash the rotary pump (I seem to remember it was a Stanadyne, but I'm not really sure) and there was no water trap in the fuel filter, which wasn't fine enough anyway. Lots of dead cars because the fuel pump ate itself on truck stop diesel. Truck diesel was terrible in those days, it's still not really up to European grade. It was common to spin a rear bearing at 25,000 mile intervals on the early engines. As a stationary engine with good fuel they run forever. They also had glow plug issues, the compression was too low, and the heads had cracking problems in road use, too. Another GM idea cheaped to death -- with a turbo, 21:1 compression ratio, and properly programmed injection timing it would have cranked out 250 hp and 300 ft/lbs of torque and been a screamer. Instead it was either a boat anchor or a smoke belching slug. They were VERY slow on upgrades, and smoked horribly at full throttle like all low compression diesels. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

GM didn't modify a gas engine, they just shared displacement. It wasn't broken cranks either, they didn't have sufficient head clamping. It was fixed by the end of the run but nobody wants to hear that part. Yeah it looks fairly straight unless that is a cheap respray and no telling what’s under it. Interior not too bad. A quick bit of the googles suggests engine swaps might be possible if the one In it is inop but there’s not a lot of length in the engine bay and the diff and rear axles probably won’t take much torque so they would need swapping too. $1000 maybe if not less? --R Sent from iPhone > On Jul 19, 2018, at 2:49 PM, Kaleb C. Send me pictures of it and I can identify. Also, find the generator nameplate, NOT the engine nameplate, which will have "Kohler" at the top with a mode, spec and serial number. It will most likely be on the side of the alternator (generator) or the controller. Once i know more I can address your needs as far as dry/dual fuel. I put in a blind bid on a generator at a sale for an electric motor shop that is going out of business. Well, I got it. When I picked it up the owner said the generator is out of a pullman car. It has a kohler engine, is probably a kohler genset. 3.5 Kw 115/230 single phase. It is a heavy sucker. It is reportedly low rpm and quiet. I went to Home despot with the generator on the trailer to pick up some cement blocks to build a base for it, and when I came out, a couple of guys came over to see it. I was enthralled by someone's 126, and these people were enthralled by my generator. They said it would be real quiet and long lived. I will need to build a surround for it, as it is not watertight. But that is a project for sometime later. I also think I can convert it to run on natural gas. Dual fuel would be even better...Anyhow, i figger in a pinch it can power some lights and the refrigerator. I like the Quiet part... ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
