[MBZ] Our Cars ROCK! GPS

2007-12-09 Thread Robert Rentfro
Spent the weekend in L.A. in a rented Gran Prix. I hated the lack visibility
to the sides and the back. It was like riding around in a chopped Merc or
something. It was terrible. I like being able to see what is around me. I
can't even imagine what driving one of those Magnums would be like.

On the other hand, the rental guy let me use a Garmin Street Pilot c550 all
weekend. Those things are sweet. Which one of those things are the best for
the money? I think I need one.

I got a Garmin Nuvi, it has traffic reports and all kinds of other
stuff, was kinda pricey but a fun and useful gadget. THe cheaper ones
have smaller screens and fewer additional features, depending on what
you want/need that sorta drives your choice. I think the Garmins get
about the best reviews. It does get confused on newer construction
though, if the maps have not been updated to reflect that.

I like Nuvi's voice, even when I get her flustered and she commands me
to do unnatural (driving) acts. She is very persistent sometimes.

On an aside, when I was first setting it up, I was sitting in my chair
in the back of the house, away from the street. I had it on, and it
determined EXACTLY where I was, and kept pointing to the edge of the
street, maybe 80 ft away, as where home was. Very cool. I was
surprised it locked on the sats from in the house, but it did with the
built-in antenna.

Reminds me of the story of the elderly German gentleman who drove into a
lake because the GPS ordered him to go that way.
Anyway those things have come down in price somewhat, I saw a unit for
under 200 Oz beans in our equivalent of wal mart.

Hendrik
who still uses the map book but might get a cheapie
GPS...for the missus..you know, ladies and maps

I think it was a river, and a ferry. He missed the point of the ferry
and drove down the ramp into the river.

I've a garmin (older) but they shipped me a 2007 map in Oct which
seems quite accurate, certainly had all the new roads in Edmonton that
were missing from the 2005 version.
A friend used it to drive down the west coast to SF and LA to visit
wineries last summer and told me it was extremely accurate and to be
trusted. The only time they fail to follow it's
advice cost them a 20 mile detour to the next overpass.

When looking consider screen size and controllability. On a car trip
you want to be able to easily yell or touch for gasoline stations of
your choice, or find place to eat espresso etc.
For some reason this is always done while driving (very unsafe).
