Re: [MBZ] RE; New car expensive parts. was: my kinda car

2013-09-02 Thread clay
The lack of care comes from being the lowest rung on the ladder. It is an
aspirational car that was not as well appointed as its larger siblings, and
therefore driven a bit harder, loved a bit less, and owned by a few folks that
did not feel they measured up enough, the next car would suit them better.
Same troubles the current C class cars dealing with. They are baby benz, for
those not quite ready for prime time Real Benz ownership, so they get abused.
I do not feel that they are a lesser vehicle, but others just do not give them
the love they need, so they wear out. No sooner than any other Benz, just not
seen as worthy of being kept up, the way the owner of a E or S class is willing
to make that investment.

The 114/115 was the standard persons benz of the 1970's. If you had real cash,
you sprang for a w116. If you had a car and needed a toy, you splurge on a
R107. Mom and Dad, Grandma, drove the 240D, Wallstreet exec drove the S, and
Richard Gere prostituted himself in a 450SL. The 240D was kept for a very long
time before meeting another owner most of the time. The SL may or may not have
hung around. The S was used for a few years then traded in for another lease
car to feed the businessman's ego.

Re: [MBZ] RE; New car expensive parts. was: my kinda car

2013-09-02 Thread Curt Raymond
Durability is one of those things... Those of us on this list are clearly
freaks in that we don't really consider 20 year old cars to be "old" or "worn
out". I'm going to buy a '98 Jetta on Thursday which will actually be the
newest car (not counting the Ranger, thats a truck) I've ever owned. My wife's
grandmother thinks I'm crazy. I contend that this is probably the last $1500
car I'll buy. Since we've refinanced the house I've socked away a bunch of
money and the Jetta is just to get me transportation to get through saving for
a new (or only slightly used) car sometime next year or the year after.

The 123 was probably overbuilt, in that its durability way exceeded that which
most car owners would ever need. The 124 is less overbuilt than the 123 but
more refined and more pleasant to live with, easier starting in extreme cold
for instance. The 201 was a less expensive 124, no less refined but definitely
cheaper built. It'd be silly to expect 124 build quality out of it as it was a
cheaper car. Still almost 30 years later we really can't doubt the durability.
What other '80s cars do you still see on the road?

Actually to answer my own question, the largest numbers of '80s cars I see are
(in declining order) Mercedes, Volvo and Volkswagen. Considering how cheaply
made the VWs were its amazing...

I quite like the 201, I've had 2 and while they're a little bit more finiky

being the worst car in MB history and the W124 being perhaps the best, i
argued that the cars were essentially so similar that i might be more a
matter of the care they received, which was less for the 201 than the 124

thinks he might need to replace the original engine soon and it only has
680k miles on it

Re: [MBZ] RE; New car expensive parts. was: my kinda car

2013-09-02 Thread Curt Raymond
The "price of safety" today. Once you put in door reinforcement, roof
reinforcement, multiple airbags, NSA snoopers, backup camera, engine management
system, air management system, thought management system, bladder management
system, AC, traction control, power steering, power brakes, power door locks,
power seats, stereo, satnav, etc it all adds up...

Re: [MBZ] RE; New car expensive parts. was: my kinda car

2013-09-02 Thread Gary Hurst
way back in the day when we first met there was a lot of talk of the W201
being the worst car in MB history and the W124 being perhaps the best, i
argued that the cars were essentially so similar that i might be more a
matter of the care they received, which was less for the 201 than the 124
as it was further down the food chain. i believe this still to be true

i once saw a guy in brevard, NC with an MGB that looked great. i lamented
how unreliable and short lived they were. he agreed, explaining that he
thinks he might need to replace the original engine soon and it only has
680k miles on it

you keep em up, they last a while

Re: [MBZ] RE; New car expensive parts. was: my kinda car

2013-09-02 Thread Curt Raymond
If you're anti-urea you're anti-diesel. The Jetta/Golf TDI is the LAST diesel
without urea in the US. Passat has it and gets slightly better mileage because
the Jetta/Golf actually sprays extra fuel through the system to burn out the
filters in a system known as "regeneration" which is one reason pushing me
toward the Passat instead of the Jetta. Some people report negative experiences
driving during regeneration. I suspect my driving style (run 'em hard) will
make it not such a big problem.

Uh, oh.  No thanks.
Gerry

Snip.Compared to the gas-powered Cruze, you also lose a couple cubic
feet of rear cargo space thanks to a 17-liter diesel emission fluid tank.
That urea fluid, which helps put the clean in clean diesel, will need to be
refilled at least every 10,000 miles.snip

I think its more maintenance than anything else. VW does require maybe a bit
more maintenance than other cars and I think VW owners are a bit less likely to
keep up with that maintenance.
A friend has a 2001 Jetta gasser with 250,000+ miles but he keeps right up with
maintenance. He's had very few problems overall.

Make sure the VW is NEW.  Used VW are not as reliable and even the sales people
at dealerships steer clear of them.

other manufacturers are using high strength steel like MB does now? Didn't
the high strength steel shave off 500 lbs between the 116 and the 126?

Snip.Compared to the gas-powered Cruze, you also lose a couple cubic
feet of rear cargo space thanks to a 17-liter diesel emission fluid tank.
That urea fluid, which helps put the clean in clean diesel, will need to be

with a four cylinder diesel in it?

I'm thinking about that W201 with a 2.1 Bluetec in it and wondering what
would happen if you stuck the Cruze diesel in an old z-24. I bet it'd go
0-60 in a lot less than 8 seconds.

I was under the impression that the Dart was smaller, more like the Focus than
the Fusion. I see a few of them around, more than the Chevy Volt...

I agree Chrysler still seems to be run by bunglers that can't seem to get their

Which is why I didn't recommend the new Dodge Dart.  It's a worthy
competitor to the Fusion IMHO and gets closer to 40 mpg on the highway, but
they aren't selling too well and I have my doubts that Chrysler will be
around in five years.  I predict that Fiat will bungle their acquisition of
the company, cut their losses just like Daimler did, and the only part of
the company left standing will be Jeep, which'll probably be bought by one
of the Japanese companies (rebadged Land Cruiser as the new Grand

The Passat is now at 13,300 miles and the average over that time is 44mpg,
with a one time high of 53. Wife gets about 33mpg dirving around town in it.

That sounds like a very possible scenario. It's a shame, too, since
Chrysler has built some exceptional cars in the past. I had a Plymouth and
a Dodge with those nearly unbreakeable slant sixes hooked to 747

My take on really good car for long trips would be an S series benz.

I drove to Colorado and back this past July 4th week. Covered 1250 miles in 22
hours, all in one sitting. No sore butt, cold air and other than having to
stay awake, not too tired after the trip. Got back home to Seattle in 18.79
hours, same route. This was in the 2002 S430.

The #1 boy got his 92 300SE back in shape, so it is road worthy. That thing
has ICE cold air. A major surprise to me in how quickly nipples become glass
cutters in that thing. Comfortable seats that would be great for long trips as
well. For a 20 year old car, the passengers must have been tiny chinese dames,
as there is no wear on the leather and seats are pretty close to factory
plumpness and spring.

YMMV, but the benz seems to hold up well if treated relatively well. Quality
between the w140 and the w220 is noticeable. Far less oriental cheapness in
the older model. Both cars came in well under $20k. Both would be a really
nice #2 condition at sale.

I'll do that next time I'm in Ocala which is the closest dealer. Hopefully
his prices are better than the local dealers. I've read a lot of good
things about the Passat and nothing bad.
I drove a Mercedes C class loaner from the dealer and wasn't impressed
either; especially with the ride.

Gerry

From: "OK Don"

OK, given those parameters, go to your nearest VW dealer and test drive a
Passat TDI - you might like it. I don't find the seats quite as
comfortable

as a Mercedes seat, but my wife can't tell the difference. Otherwise it
meets all your requirements, with the cost of parts being an unknown (for
me at least).
I actually thought the Passat drove better than the new C class MB when I
was shopping a couple of years ago.
The AC did great today driving around town with a little highway time at
102F.

From: "Curt Raymond"

"Best" is a very relative concept. I like the Jetta/Passat. A gasser of
either will run in the $18-20k range, the TDI Jetta starts around $23k with
the Passat about $3k more.

G: Those are good prices.

My in-laws have a Fusion, I think theirs is a 2008. Its a very good toaster
of a car. Boring as all get out but gets you from here to there. If I were
wanting toaster transportation I'd probably go with that, for a bit more
driving excitement a Jetta/Passat with preference to the TDI.

G: As I mentioned in another email, my son has a Fusion Hybrid, but you
can't touch one for $25K around here. That would be a great choice since
it's a good solid car that rides well and has comfortable seats. My son
averaged 37 mpg between Nashville and Orlando driving 80 mph.

I'm not a good judge of air-conditioning, we so rarely "need" it. The last
couple days commuting its been relatively warm but although the AC works on
my 190D I rarely use it, I can handle the heat just fine...

-Curt

G: The Fusion Hybrid A/C could have frozen us out on a 200 mile trip we
made.

IIRC, there are at least three different seat options (that come with the
different trim levels) - should be one that will work for you. We have the
middle one - electric drivers seat, manual passengers seat.

FYI, we bought a set of Oregon Aero seat cushions for the 182 - they make a
HUGE difference in comfort. Wife won't fly without hers now.

Re: [MBZ] RE; New car expensive parts. was: my kinda car

2013-08-31 Thread Gerry Archer
Okay, you convinced me. What's the best riding, best seated car for long
trips that can be bought for around $25K or less?
Also, which company has the most reasonably priced parts? Coldest air
conditioning?

Also, what's a SanGauge? Internet turns up nothing related to car repair.

I think that argument (which goes back a long time) is a waste of breath.
I've got a 2003 Ranger - zero electronics failures. My '96 Dodge Dakota had
the oil pressure sender fail, cheap easy fix. My '88 GMC - zero electronics
failures. My wife's '91 Ford Tempo used to have ignition controller failures
every 25,000 miles or so. It was a simple fix, you were supposed to buy a
special tool but I modified an 8mm socket to fit. I think the controller was
$25 or $30...

Everybody says "you can't work on cars anymore" which is ever so much bunk.
Sure you need a SanGauge or VAG-COM but its really just a special wrench.

What's the aftermarket parts situation on Japanese cars, Gary? Which model
has the largest "installed base"? Camry? Accord? Civic?
One disturbing factor about new and initially less troublesome cars is the
cost of the electronic modules that seem to run everything; engine,
transmission, etc., etc. If cheaper aftermarket modules were available for
when the car gets a few years older, I'd probably buy a new, trouble free
car primarily for the purpose of making out-of-county trips. These old
Mercedes are great locally, but a breakdown on a long trip could get very
expensive with days in a motel.
