Re: [MBZ] Rousting Rusty, or new muffler for my '87TD
So what is the deal with WP vs OEM or Benz parts? Is WP some knock-off thing? Does that go for various parts or just this muffler? --R
Re: [MBZ] Rousting Rusty, or new muffler for my '87TD
Hi Joe, Sorry to hear of your troubles. I bought a complete exhaust system for my 78 240D from Rusty a couple of years ago - and last Jan I bought a rear muffler for the 91 300D which looked to be identical to the original that came off - and the fit was perfect. My point being, Rusty's parts suppliers get/sell different brands and the selection is often a basis of price. I suspect WP supplied whatever they had on the shelf and its quality was the result of WPs never-ending quest to remain competitive by reducing prices. You'd be amazed at the number of people who buy strictly on the basis of price regardless of quality. Some people will spend an inordinate amount of time trying to make a POS part fit (i.e, get a bigger hammer - also known as a BFH) when the OEM part would slip right in. I guess the most important part is seeing Rusty step up and provide a replacement at a competitive price. We're very lucky to have Rusty working with us to make things right. The added benefit of having Rusty monitor the list and provide help on parts without being asked. Don't see that very often/ (Rusty, please send the check to my usual address) ;-) Larry T (67 MGB, 74 911, 78 240D, 91 300D) www.youroil.net for Oil Analysis and Weber Parts Test Results http://members.rennlist.com/oil PORSCHE POSTERS! youroil.net Weber Carb Info http://members.rennlist.com/webercarbs Porsche Road Test http://members.rennlist.com/roadtest/ . - Original Message - From: Joe Knight [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Mercedes@okiebenz.com Sent: Sunday, March 04, 2007 4:39 PM Subject: [MBZ] Rousting Rusty, or new muffler for my '87TD Bit of an odyssey over over muffler replacement. Ordered new one thru Tom at Rusty's about 3 weeks ago. WoldPac muffler as delivered was a useless pos. Rusty stepped right up and issued a call tag for return all the way to Atlanta so he could show the thing to his local WP rep. He also offered to get me a new OE muffler for just a few bux more than the offending unit, which offer I accepted with some alacrity. New muffler installed yesterday is identical to the unit it's replacing leaving me a completely happy camper - at least I will be as soon as I see a credit for the returned pos on my card statement. http://jsknight.googlepages.com/wagonmufflerpics Pics of both are to be found thru the above link. What they point out is that the 1st bend in the inlet pipe is at the wrong angle rendering the thing useless even were I otherwise inclined to live with such an abomination. Point I want to make is that, unless WP cleans up its act in this regard, anyone looking to replace a muffler would do well to stick with OE, and not even just OEM. -joe ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
