Not from Costco! My 380SL has 420SEL wheels on it, now 15's instead of 14's and they won't install new tires on it. They will only install factory recommended sizes even though 560SLs have 15" wheels they wouldn't budge. I'm guessing some liability where some clown asked them to install a tire that interfered and had a blowout etc. > -Original Message- > From: mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com [mailto:mercedes- > boun...@okiebenz.com] On Behalf Of Allan Streib > Sent: Tuesday, October 20, 2009 5:33 PM > To: Mercedes Discussion List > Subject: Re: [MBZ] SD Tires -- Michelin X ??? > > Rich Thomas writes: > > > Well I went over to Costco and got the set of Xs, I asked the guy > > about other types, he said he didn't have any others in the > 195/70R14. > > Well whaddya expect with those puny foteens. Re: [MBZ] SD Tires -- Michelin X ???
Well I went over to Costco and got the set of Xs, I asked the guy about other types, he said he didn't have any others in the 195/70R14. They seem OK, its not like mama drives autocross so I am sure they will be fine. Leaving Costco, I was waiting at an intersection to turn right onto a busy divided highway, oncoming traffic stopped so I was going to RTOR but saw the light was green so started to go when WHAM!!! a car turning left across the highway (oncoming red, she was probably waiting to turn and went when the light turned red) got t-boned by a guy in a 4-door Jeep (I can't remember what they are called, they added 2 doors to the regular old Jeep) who blew the red light going maybe 40-45. I jumped out went to check on everyone, as did the guys who were behind the hitter. Older woman driving the hittee (a newish Toyota Camry or something like that) was OK, her 20some daughter in the pass seat was shaken badly but did not appear to be damaged, I made her be still and sit there until the ambulance came. After a couple minutes she calmed down a bit and said she thought she was OK, but made her stay there anyway. She was gonna have to be cut out anyway. Door was punched in a foot or so but the car held up pretty well, I was surprised at that hit. The Jeep driver, 60some guy, did not appear to have on a seatbelt, he was passed out, but the Jeep was in good shape. His doors were locked so we couldn't check him out. Cop showed up in just a coupla minutes, then a firetruck to block the road. Hitter was coming too but seemed out of it. I left my info with the cop, talked to the woman driving the hittee, told them to go to hospital then call a lawyer when they got home to deal with it all. Guy who stopped in the car behind the hitter said the hitter tapped his brakes just as the entered the intersection, so he wasn't even slowing down. Just heard on the radio that the road is still closed, the interstate that dumps off there is backed up forever. This happened like an hour and a half ago. The cop just called me to get my details, said everyone was OK. Exciting day, I was hyper alert driving home. --R glenn brown wrote: I've been somewhat disappointed with the last two sets of Michelin MXV4 tires on my '84 300D as they were rather noisy (squealing) at minimally aggressive cornering no matter the tire pressures. That looks like what is happening to the X ones on there now. One has been losing air slowly, thought it was a nail, took it off and close inspection shows the belt on both edges starting to separate. Maybe 3/16" - 1/4" tread left, but they are dried and cracked too, so probably fairly old. --R Allan Streib wrote: I had Michelin X-1 tires on my 300D a few years ok. they were ok at first but the belts separated before the tread wore out. Re: [MBZ] SD Tires -- Michelin X ???
Well, here in the Low Country we won't be getting much snow, and I don't see driving anywhere where that would be an issue. The tires on there now are Michelin X one that look like they might be several years old, though they still have some good tread left. I think they are just old and rotting and starting to separate. I'll probably pop over to Costco tomorrow and get a set and be done with it. The reviews I have seen suggest they are decent tires, we won't be autocrossing or anything so I'm sure they will be fine. The pic of the new X looks very similar to what is on there now, so similar tread pattern. Thanks all for the opinions. --R R A Bennell wrote: Depending on where you live and the sort of winter conditions you experience, I would be more concerned about stickyness than rolling resistance. although i've had good luck in most instances with Michelin on several different vehicles (including Xs and XZXs), the set i put on our 300D several years back tracked and followed road irregularities so badly that the tire shop swapped them out for a set of comparable-level Pirellis. (sorry, i don't have the model number/name of those Michelins handy right now, but they were a rebranded model specifically labeled for one of the major tire chain stores.) much to my surprise, those Pirellis have lasted almost 60K miles so far. WRT to rolling resistance; there was a sidebar in the AAA magazine recently that mentioned one of the subscription consumer organizations (Consumer Reports, IIRC) was the only group actually doing standardized rolling resistance testing. in my experience to date, tires that had lower rolling resistance typically also had poorer traction and/or ride performance. if that's changed for the better (and only fair testing would show that) and assuming that those tires are not suffering in any other area of performance, one has to ask oneself how much one is likely to save in fuel by using those tires to determine if any additional cost it worth it. personally, i'm most interested in a tires grip and reliability, with ride and availability of support following close behind. wear and rolling resistance fall far behind in the list of primary considerations. cheers! e Dillon, Meade M CIV SPAWARSYSCEN-ATLANTIC, 53310 wrote: A few years ago when I was tire shopping, the lacking bit of information was tire rolling resistance. Michelin is one of the few companies that does provide some info, and they seem to have relatively low rolling resistance, but personally I think they are an over-priced tire for the rest of the performance numbers. I've bought Continental tires for both my wagon and Wife's Infiniti and I'm quite happy with them. I've also had Bridgestone Turanza tires on Wife's car and they were not so great. I calculate a 10% loss in fuel economy vs. the Michelins I replaces, they were a bit noisy, but great wear and grip. [MBZ] SD Tires -- Michelin X ???
I had a tire going flat slowly, pulled it off to take it to the tire shop, looks old and cracked and like the tread is starting to separate at the edge. I thought I saw a nail but digging at it a bit it looks like a steel belt, YOW. Costco has a Michelin X in 195 70 R14 for $316 for a set, which seems like a good deal, and a $70 rebate (not sure if that price is the before or after rebate). Are these decent tires? There are some sort of Michelins on there now. --R ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
