Yup, there is that one too. That one happens most of the time in Jeeps and
S-10s. Those inline 4s just didn't have the power/torque needed to do off
roading properly. So people continuously stuff V8s between their frame
rails.

I had two Willys Utility Wagons when I was in Colorado, one with the
in-line 6 and one with a Ford 302 V8. The one with the 302 had more power
and got better fuel mileage.

I can see the appeal of conversions that are trying to solve a problem
(e.g. Chevy mouse motor into Jag, Subaru flat-four into Vanagon), but
some seem to be the result of someone with too much time on their
hands and a couple of junk cars that they couldn't think of anything
better to do with. Because it would fit isn't sufficient reason to
go to the effort of swapping motors.

If you have an old Cougar with a nice body and a rusted out W115 that
runs strong, no job to occupy your time and provide you with money
to buy another car, because it will fit is reason enough to do it.
Not reason enough to ask $12k for your FrankenMerc, however.

I'm not sure that I would follow through with this project since the price
of Diesel has gotten so high, but I've thought of putting a Mercedes Diesel
into a RWD minivan (Ford Aerostar/Chevy Astro). There's a guy on another
list who has a full size Chevy van with a NA OM617 in it, but I wouldn't
think it would be too practical here in the mountainous PNW. However, the
minivan would weigh only slightly more than a 300SD.
