While you personally may not see a need for conversions, hopefully this illustrates the mass market *appeal* of conversions and where they begin. The one with the 302 had more power and got better fuel mileage. I can see the appeal of conversions that are trying to solve a problem (e.g. Chevy mouse motor into Jag, Subaru flat-four into Vanagon), but some seem to be the result of someone with too much time on their hands and a couple of junk cars that they couldn't think of anything better to do with. I'm not sure that I would follow through with this project since the price of Diesel has gotten so high, but I've thought of putting a Mercedes Diesel into a RWD minivan (Ford Aerostar/Chevy Astro). There's a guy on another list who has a full size Chevy van with a NA OM617 in it, but I wouldn't think it would be too practical here in the mountainous PNW. However, the minivan would weigh only slightly more than a 300SD.
