I did, until the move back to AT&T. I upgraded to an 8, since the
4S was basically doomed at that point. The 4S was quite a bit
smaller than what replaced it. That was kind of nice, plus I had
two drop-in charging stands for it, and a video cable for the TV.

I still have it, but it won't talk anymore. Can still use it for wifi apps
around the house, if I want to I guess.

I have four SEs in rotation. One just decided that the ringer wasn’t going to
work any longer after Mom in law plugged in a headset. I presume the jack
failed and disabled the speaker.

I have a 7 Plus that’s my County work phone, and I really like it, but I’m not
keen about the size, which is why I like the SE. I guess I could move us up to
7’s and have a slightly larger form factor, but why spend the money when
everyone is happy with what they have? That and we don’t do a lot of stuff on
our phones short of calls and texts. If we want to surf the net or watch
something we do it on a larger device.

Yeah, I'd heard about that. My zero service at the beach with the 4S might
have been
mitigated, but IIRC the new tower in that area wasn't all that close either.
My wife and
son did have newer iPhones, probably 6's, but weren't happy anyway. (They were
never at the beach, so no direct test there.) With our renewed AT&T, and
iPhones

have to have a newer phone.  I think the Iphone 8 and up will pick it

Yeahbut, at a big/busy airport you'd gain or drop 300-500 connections at a
time every minute or so. Not only are there a lot of connections they rise and
fall "all of a sudden" as a plane arrives or departs.
At a sports venue the ramp up or down would slower, although still pretty darn
fast.
I guess during high traffic times the demand at an airport would be pretty
steady with just individual connections changing in/out.

must have around airports. The load fluctuation around airports must be massive.

Lock it to the local tower.  That makes sense, it's the only way they could even
hope to guarantee service levels.  Imagine everybody bringing their units with
them to Sturgis, for example.

We had AT&T for years because we had a vendor discount.
We tried tmobile for a month, based largely upon the knowledge
that it falls back to AT&T towers where it has none of its own.
Only then did we discover that the fallback is on a tower-by-tower
basis, at the discretion of AT&T, and that one of our primary sites
of interest did NOT fallback to that tower. Next month we were back
on AT&T. Once we finally talked to a knowledgable guy at a store,
he said that for travelers, for those outside of the metropolitan areas,
only Verizon and AT&T had any kind of universal coverage. (This
was last year.)

If you can order an Uber, or a pizza, you might find one of the secondary
vendors satisfactory. Otherwise, not.

Having worked on both AT&T’s and Verizon’s site buildouts, I can assure you
that Verizon has everyone beat as far as number of cells and national coverage.
I was told that part of the rationale was to be able to sell off service for
piggybacking to smaller providers, like Spectrum. My Spectrum account, that
costs me a grand total of $66/month for four lines with 4GB of pooled data
piggybacks on Verizon.

Never had a problem using it anywhere I’ve gone.

We had T-Mobile at first, but often had to go outside to make calls. Then
we found that we had no service when we flew to small town airports, etc.
Hard to cal for a ride when there is no service. We asked what the locals
used, and it was Verizon everywhere we went (N, S, E, W), so we switched
and it's been great everywhere. More expensive, but it works.

When I first got EVDO on Alltel, it was practically like having a T-1 line
(the T-1 that fed the tower two miles away). Then the neighbor and his kid
both got Alltel modems, and performance dropped. Within a year there were
probably about ten of us on that tower and it wasn't worth $60/mo anymore.

So far so good. This is $50 a month. There is a different WISP in the area I
thought about contacting before I went this route. They offer up to 25Mbps for
$199 a month and 20 for $149. They have cheaper plans also but the T Mobile
thing is much cheaper if it works ok in the long run. Even though this other
company offers those speeds no telling if you actually get them.

[MBZ] T Mobile home internet

2020-08-29 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
The T Mobile home internet router arrived yesterday.  It is basically
simple router with 2 ports, has a port for WAN and a port for PHONE.
The WAN and PHONE ports had plugs in them and are not used.  Also
includes a 2.4 and a 5 ghz wifi bands.  It then has an internal "cell
phone" for LTE signal and even has a battery in case the power goes out,
the router will still run.

I currently have 2 routers at the house, one in my office which was at
the point where the network cable came in for the internet.  The other
one is in the living room so its wifi coverage would better reach the
back of the house where the kid is located with his XBox.  I had to
refresh my memory on networking basics as it has been a while since I
set one up.

I really wanted to just use the T Mobile as a modem and run everything
thru the main router in my office.  I don't think that is possible so I
had to set the T Mobile router as the gateway and DHCP server with
192.168.1.1 as its address.  set its range of address to something like
.25-.254. I then plugged in both of the other 2 routers into the 2 ports
on the T Mobile router.  I sent the router in my office to 192.168.1.2
with its DHCP turned off, its default gateway is 192.168.1.1 and DNS
server is also 192.168.1.1.  Same for the second router except I set its
address to 192.168.1.3.  Network is now humming along just fine.

As far as speeds go, I am testing at around 18-20Mbps, sometimes hitting
up to 30 or so.  Not quite in town LTE speeds but what I usually get out
in the sticks.  Last night the kid was on his Xbox, while we were
steaming Netflix and I ran several speed tests while this was going on.
It would usually run around 10-12Mbps but would sometimes hit up close
to 18.  The kid who always complained about the old internet was happy.
When starting a Netflix show it figured up almost instantly instead of
having to load.

The old WISP internet was supposed to be 12Mbps for which I was paying
$99 per month usually actually ran at around 4-6.  Would sometimes hit
close to 12 but not very often.  Many times I would only get 1-3 Mbps
out of it, especially when the kid was on his XBox.  Supposedly there
are no data caps and I asked them if they slows down the data after you
pass a certain point.  This said since this was a limited amount of
people they were allowing on the service it would not be slowed down.  I
am skeptical so I will probably keep the old service active for a month
to see how this works out.  Last night after about 7pm till now we have
already used 15.7GB of data.

[MBZ] T (otally)OT - Unexpected intersection hazard

2018-12-21 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
VIRGINIAIntersection overrun with cats deemed a 'hazard'Published:
Thursday, December 20, 2018

An intersection in a Virginia city has been deemed a hazard because it has
been overrun with abandoned cats.

News outlets report the Danville Area Humane Society made the designation
this week after a witness reported seeing a motorist stop and release 30
cats at the intersection.

Executive Director Paulette Dean said she believes more than 100 cats live
near the intersection of Piney Forest Road and Riverside Drive. She said
the area has been a dumping ground for cats for many years. The Humane
Society has been setting traps at the spot for a decade but says the
population continues to outpace the traps.

Meanwhile, the Humane Society is offering a reward of up to $1,000 for
information regarding the person responsible for dumping the cats. *—

Re: [MBZ] T-Bone stopper -- BAS PLUS automatic braking

2013-02-16 Thread Peter Frederick
I've used the ABS once, and I'm convinced it allowed me to pull back
onto the highway and keep traveling once I was sure everyone in front
of me that had damage was OK and the police had been called.
Ambulance was there already, they cruise the highways in Cincinatti it
seems.

Believe me, it was great to be able to stomp the brake pedal and worry
about getting off the interstate without attempting to modulate the
brakes. Left smoking trails on the pavement, but I was 5 feet behind
the car in front when I stopped -- she hit the car in front of her,
and that car hit the van that spun out in the left lane of I-75 at 60
mph.

Great things, antilock brakes...

Haven't tested the airbag yet, it didn't go off in my T-bone crash 6
years ago.

I use the ABS on snowy or rain soaked pavement every few months to ensure it
works. I have yet to have it engage in a panic stop. As far as airbags go, I
think a sharpened spike in its place would be more effective at accident
prevention. Lol :-) JK

2013-02-16 Thread WILTON
I've needed/used my '91 350SDL ABS only once; one night years ago in rain, a
car suddenly pulled out in front of me; I hit brake hard and held it; brakes
pulsed in a machine gun fusion, and my car held a straight ahead track and
stopped short of a collision.

Werner, the 10mm 12 point wrench, not socket, is what it takes to

some LocTite was used on the threads Good luck.
