[MBZ] Thoughts on 190E 5-speed?

2011-03-07 Thread Allan Streib

Anyone have anything similar? I don't have any experience with this particular
model. Thought I might take a look at it, though I just bought that W116 so I
really can't take on another car right now. Plus it's not a diesel.

I test drove a 1986 300E five-speed before SWMBO purchased her 1985 300CD.
It was quite BORING.

I have a 5spd in my 87 300d. Not sure of the gearing on the 190 but at
60mph I am turning around 1700rpm. That may be a dogleg 5speed.

I doubt it's a dogleg, probably the regular up for first arrangement. I don't
see any evidence of other 2.3-16 parts, like spoilers, wheel arches, or seats.

My biggest beef against the 201's is that the interiors are very cheap.
Another

The 2.6 5 speed combo is a pretty desirable one in a W201 and you
should definitely take a look if such a car fancies you... you'll find it
quite different than a W116! The price is a bit high for a W201, but if the
car is nice with low miles, its absolutely reasonable.

For a little while I had a 190D 2.5t, but I'm not a big fan of the W201...
just a bit too small for me. I sold the car off after a short time.

Just M103 weaknesses... head gaskets and valve guides. Nothing serious
enough to avoid purchase of such a car. Overall, the engine is quite good.

Oh yeah, and rust, especially around the jack points in the W201.

Re: [MBZ] Thoughts on 190E 5-speed?

2011-03-07 Thread Curt Raymond
Condition, condition, condition...

Could be worth it, could be crap. I've probably got $4500 in my '84 190D right
now (it was a $250 car remember) and its got a creaking ball joint (just
started tonight) so $3k if its really in good shape is probably fair.

Worth anything close to the asking price ($3K) ?

2011-03-08 Thread Dieselhead
Only if it is geared right. Unless a 5 spd has an overdrive fifth,
or the vehicle has a lower ratio diff, you only go through more gears.

Most trans have the top gear 1:1 so the engine turns the same rpm at
a given road speed whether it is a 3, 4 or 5 speed. (unless the diff
ratio is changed)

2011-03-08 Thread Max Dillon
My understanding is that Mercedes of the 123 and earlier era had 4th gear as
1:1, so fifth gear is overdrive. I don't know if that practice followed into
201 and later cars, but I can tell you that my 190D with five speed did not
seem
to me to be at a high engine RPM at highway speed.

Re: [MBZ] Thoughts on 190E 5-speed?

2011-03-08 Thread Curt Raymond
The 2.2l 190Ds all have the same diff so the auto is quick off the line but
runs out of grunt. The manual has the overdrive 5th to keep the revs down on
the highway. My auto 190D and manual 240D (4spd) seem to rev about the same on
the highway.

All the W201 manual trans have mild OD, like .79 or .82 to one, except the 16v
is 1:1 with that odd racing shift pattern. I've heard of W123 5sp, but never
actually seen one. Doesn't Euan have a 300TD 5sp? Has anybody heard from Euan
since Christchurch got clobbered?
