If the cable is broken it'd become a 2 step process, you'd need to release the part the cable should release which I think could be done with a long thin screwdriver. Once thats done the other step is easy. I am sure the stealer has a way to get in without bashing the grill. May be worth some calls, long term stealers who sold 124s may have the knowledge. most don't retain employees that long, and are therefor useless. Nothing in the CDs? I remember examining the mechanism and thinking that it would be quite difficult to defeat. I don't see how the hood can be opened via the grill without drilling/cutting/removing more metal that protects the hood latch. With great care and a stout jeweler's screwdriver you can pop the hood on a 107, no damage. The PO did this on our for-sale SL. Took him quite awhile. My first act was to hook a coathanger wire to the release lever. Having that big semi-open circle in the middle was key, I believe. On the 110/111 i could release the hood from underneath with a stick. Never had to try this on a 123/124/126 so don't know if it can work. I bought a grill insert with the chrome surround and star on ebay. Now, when it arrives, I can go through the egg crate and find a way to release the hood. Thanks again for all the help. I bought a grill insert with the chrome surround and star on ebay. Now, when it arrives, I can go through the egg crate and find a way to release the hood. Thanks again for all the help. I had this issue with a 123 and found I could remove the lock plate from the hood from underneath. Took some gyrations but was do-able. I have found in some cases that if the cable jacket can move around there's too much slack in the cable, preventing it from being pulled in enough to release the latch. The S500 did this with the passenger side hood latch - the other latch would release but this side wouldn't - preventing you from opening the hood. I tie wrapped the cable to a spot on the radiator support and it's been fine ever since. I had a similar problem on the 300Sd that the hood would not latch down on one side. Thought something in there was buggered or out of adjustment or whatever. Took things apart, adjusted, etc. to no avail. finally sprayed lot of PB on the latch, the cable, and anything else that did/didn't move, and finally it was working fine.
