Re: [MBZ] Way ot Re: illegals
Indiana is actually in better financial shape than its neighbors, particularly IL and WI. Especially IL. Bloomington in particular is faring better than much of the nation, our recently announced county unemployment rate was 6.6%. A couple of big construction projects here are University projects, ultimately public dollars, though the University has done a good job managing its finances despite state funding cuts and its bond rating has actually improved. They are taking advantage of currently low construction costs to make infrastructure improvements. There is also brisk activity in apartment/condo construction. Several major new high-rise (which here means ~10 stories) complexes have been recently built and more are underway. I have no idea who rents these (probably students with mom and dad's money) but they are going up all over the downtown area. The city is trying to encourage "compact urban" development so they are approving those types of development more than they are new development on the fringes, which they term "sprawl." Nope, next door to our place is a colonia that a local farmer houses his migrants in for a few weeks during the summer (these are graders not pickers, "your higher class of julio" as he explains it) and they are all legal. Now this fella did spend a little time paying off a federal felony the last year or so (importing Wisconsin deer to his hunting farm) but does not mess with the illegals. The "willing to do the work" is totally operative here despite a large number of unemployed people who have few skills of any sort. A lot of stuff goes unpicked as there seems to be enough money in it that not all stuff needs to be picked. I am told the aforementioned fella made $10M year before last on his tomats after the blight hit Florida. Gleaners come and pick stuff after the market tomats are picked if the farmer allows, I might do that this year and lay in a supply of sauce. --R On 3/27/11 11:07 AM, Allan Streib wrote: Rich Thomas writes: Big fines for employers (I think $10k/head), if caught they are sent off. I was sorta impressed. Then some whackjob woman asked what she was doing about the muslim terrorist training camps in the state, they were all documented on the internet, there was a big one outside some little town. Re: [MBZ] Way ot Re: illegals
Gee guys, Can you really equate entering a country illegally and stealing resources away from the rightful citizens of that country to speeding. If you can, then maybe you missed Civics class in high school. I'm by far NOT a law and order citizen, but I do believe that you try to obey all laws and try to change those you find unjust or just wrong or outdated...and you make those changes via the legal methods as prescribed by law. So, I'll admit that I have been guilty of speeding on occasion, but I have never illegally entered another country. And as for basically doing away with the USA and its form of government because we believe it all is wrong means we accept the fact that we haven't chosen our politicians very well. Instead of throwing the baby out with the bath water, we might consider: Selecting politicians based on character and not charisma. Listening to what is said and not how it's said. Vetting for completeness and not for convenience. Over the decades of my life, I've seen the quality of life in the USA diminish because personal interest groups have socially, politically, and legally chiseled away at our society. Some things needed changed, but we have gone so far that some think everything should be allowed. I don't want totalitarianism nor do I want anarchy. I think people try to make light of issues, scorn or make fun of those they don't agree with, but if we don't start getting serious and fixing things, then the joke will be on all of us. I for one have never had a free ride in life and I will not condone giving it to someone else regardless of how "courageous" someone thinks their actions are.
