So it cranked slower and slower until finally "clunk".
That sounds like the probably didn't have enough energy to cause further
damage.

2024-01-10 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
It was spinning fine, then it seemed like either the battery or starter was
failing. It spinned (spun?) slowly a coupla times then clunk and no spinnies.
Charged up the battery but would still just clunk. Changed the starter and
still just clunk. Tried to spin by hand forward and nothing though it will go
backwards a bit. Should’ve tried that before going to the trouble of changing
starter.

This suggests chain is broken or bound up inside but could be something else I
suppose. Guides broken?

This is kinda weird as it was spinning fine when I picked it up and
when we were messing with it until it seemed like the starter had
quit.  No cam codes or timing issues showing which is what you see
when these engines jump timing due to the balance shaft sprocket
wearing down.  I think there might be some way to get a borescope in
there to look at it, I remember seeing something about that.

So anyway, it is a nice car other than the engine likely being
trashed, which is kind of a surprise since it seemed to be spinning
OK.  But not a lot of $$$ into it, I will look for another engine and
pop it in.

It's interesting the engine is a diesel, but the model number has no "D"
in it.

It's also interesting the injection pump is on the passenger side, unlike
later engines with the injection pump is on the driver's side.

Any idea what OM it is? OM621?

When I was in the USAF stationed in Colorado Springs in 1972, I had the
opportunity to buy a ponton diesel, but bought our '72 220D/8 new.

Probably not a lot, but there are a lot of things missing on that car that will
be tough to find. Looks pretty solid for a Ponton, though, but definitely, a
full-blown restoration is in order.

Well, it _is_ a V12 is it not? Not sure why low fuel would have affected the
transmission behavior.
Still wouldn't hurt to check the ground points. A whole lotta crap can 'go
bad' at once that way.

I woke up dis mawnin and the first thought in my cabeza was GAS! (Not
THAT kind, petrol gas) So I took a jug up, poured it in the tank, the
car fired up, and I drove it home.  DUH!

I don't have the "new" instrument cluster in and programmed yet, thought
there was a fair amount of gas in it as I had put some in at some point
and have not driven it that much. Actually thought as I was leaving the
Vast Estate yesterday that I should hit the station to put some more in
but NAH! I'll be OK!

Anyway, dumbass me...  I did get my steps in yesterday and today walking
2.5mi home then back this morning to fetch the GL I took the gas can
in.  So there's that...

[MBZ] Well $#!+

2023-06-04 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
I decided to fool around with the CL600 this afternoon as it had been throwing
codes for O2 sensors and the cam sensor I had recently changed. Battery charged
up, started fine and… no codes!

Gave it a wash then out for a little spin. It was running great (these things
are REALLY fast). Got 2.5mi up the road and turned around in a little shopping
center lot then headed back.

Got about 1/4mi, went into a limp mode, transmission acting up, not running
well, finally died. I got it on the side of the road ok then hooked up the
scanner to see what it was unhappy about. Multiple misfires on 6-8 zylinders, a
cam sensor code again, and some other random code for something I forget.

I walked home (got my steps!) and came back in the GL with tools and battery. I
got thinking while I was walking that maybe the battery was bad as it had run
down a coupla times but charged right back up (and was fine earlier). Jumped up
a good new battery and still no joy. I then swapped it in, nope. Engine will
spin fine, barely runs at low rough idle then dies, but now it sounds like the
starter bendix is not disengaging. Weird.

It was doing some other kinda weird electrical things too. So I’m wondering if
there’s some electrical fault somewhere or if it’s something else with the
engine ECU or wiring or something. Don’t know why it would just happen like
that unless the heat made something really unhappy.

I’m gonna let it sit awhile and see if it cools down later. If it still won’t
go I guess I’ll get the trailer hooked up and go collect it in the morning.

Bah.

If it uses taillight socket arrangements similar to the W210 there’s a good
chance t’s just corrosion.

Youngest son’s 2002 E320 has a reverse light in the trunk lid that is
intermittent. I’ve tinkered with it numerous times and no matter what I do it
seems to have a life of it’s own. New lamp, cleaned the contacts, etc., etc.
Just a lousy design.

Headlight squirters in later models seem to be a failed effort to clean the
headlights. I’m not sure that they’re effective, at all.

[MBZ] Well that was easy — locks on CL500

2022-07-22 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
There is a pneumatic pump that both blows and sucks to open/close the doors and
trunk. German electromechanical engineering at its finest. 20A fuse was blown.
It was working then it quit so a new fuse cured it. The key fob now opens and
closes doors and opens trunk. (I need to order a new fob shell as this one is
worn out). I used the blade key earlier to open driver door at Costco which of
course set off the alarm which was loud as hell. I should kill that thing.

BTW I ordered a 250 piece fuse kit off Amazon that showed up just before I
started this job (which was somewhat contorted because I had locked the
passenger door and the fuse panel is behind the passenger seat under the rear
seat and I had to climb in from the driver side, it is tight in the back) so I
could CHANGE THE FUSE. the kit has a bunch of the bigger blade fuses and the
smaller ones in various sizes. Should keep me going for awhile. It was not
expensive, good to have around in the tool kit.

I’m getting error messages for lights, some of which appear to be working.
H. Some for bulbs in the tail lights which are not intuitively removable.
I’ll have to research that. Also says a low beam headlight but it is working. I
wonder if someone put in some funky bulbs. And the switch must be a replacement
as it does not pull out for fogs and rear bright taillight. Weird.

This car has headlight squirters that appear to be more like car wash sprayers.
I think the nozzles are buggered up as they sprayed the hood and fenders. Not
that I need them but interesting feature.

I probably should. I like mob stories and documentaries. I watched the Michael
Franzese and Sammy Gravano podcasts on YouTube until they started to get
repetitive.

I just haven't taken the time for movies in years. I did like Goodfellas and
Casino though. For whatever reason, never watched any of the Godfather movies.

Just don’t try to go to B&H on Saturday…

Canal Street can be cool, as is the diamond district. Just a cool place to see
the people and surrounds.

I guess it depends what kind of experience you want to get. The tourist
stuff is all there and well known. Going to the top of building is cool,
but once you go up one you've seen them all.

You can really absorb so much of the city by just walking around, sitting
outside and eating a meal, and visiting some museums. Goto a show or
something. Visit B&H photo. All stuff new yorkers do.

2021-08-10 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
Best time of year to see NYC is late January or early Feb, if you don't
mind the snow. I remember Janet and I were walking around one cold night
(back when she lived there before we were married) and we walked by
Rockefeller plaza. Some guy at the door was announcing there was no line
and no wait to goto the top of the building, so we went. Walked right into
the elevator and up to the top. Cool experience without any tourists.

It could be the times or it could be the kind of idiots you get in those groups.
I think the best time to see Times Square is about 6am. Get coffee from a cart
and just sit around and watch. Better around Christmas...

Also, look for :
The *Outdoor Co-ed Topless Pulp Fiction Appreciation Society* was a group
of several dozen women and a few men that had, since August 17, 2011,[1]

organized regular gatherings around New York City

books in public while topless.[2]

[3]

The primary objective of the group, besides enjoying the sun and book
reading, was to create awareness that New York law allows toplessness
in public, and to change social
attitudes to the exposure of women's breasts. The group's blog had reported
that there had been no harassment of the participants by the police
, and very
rarely by the public.

Thats a pretty okay hotel. It's an easy walk to 30 Rock and the Empire State
building. A longish walk to Times Square, pretty far to the 911 memorial.
There is a diner between there and the Empire State that I used to go to. Old
school, big menu, good food, small money. I can't find it on Google Maps, it's
been a long time since I've been there.
Another thing you might check out, try to be at B&H Photo (33rd & 9th) at maybe
4:30 on Friday. The place is run by Hasidic Jews, they close at sun down on
Friday which, at least in the 90s when I went there "Put down the items and
leave now." It was pretty funny to watch people who didn't know what was going
on.

Speaking of UN, what about that Hilton right by the UN, or is that still a long

Re: [MBZ] Well I’m booked to NYC

2021-08-10 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Probably $50. I took a cab once from Penn station to sheepshead bay in
Brooklyn, $90 and a long ride.
I would recommend you go a little farther uptown, 30th st or so which puts you
in walking distance of Times Square and Rockefeller Center to the north and the
Sept 11 memorial to the south. I used to stay in a Holiday Inn express around
there. It's a pretty good good hotel, don't gag too badly when you see
Manhattan prices, the most I ever paid was $700/night but that was a week the
UN was in town. If you do stay in that area go walk the Highline, I bet the
flowers are nice this time of year.

LGA is run down, or it was a couple years ago when I last went there. It's not
a bad airport though.
To anybody who hasn't been in NYC in 30 years, this is not the city it was.
It's cleaned up a lot and is pretty safe by big city standards. Stick to the
touristy areas and nobody will bother you.

[MBZ] Well I’m booked to NYC

2021-08-09 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
Which turned into the kid also wanting to go. So I had to pay for 2 tickets out
of pocket. This also has turned into me staying until Monday so I can enjoy
some sight seeing over the weekend. Since I had to buy tickets for the wife and
kid I went the cheapest route possible, which in this case was LGA.

I have a company paid hotel, Hampton Inn Brooklyn, up until Friday, and will
book my own reservation Friday thru Monday. Might possibly relocate to a
different hotel for the weekend? Recommended areas to look at? Perhap Manhattan
closer to tourist crap? Or stay at same hotel? Any ferries that go across to
them ride that Staten Island ferry? I’m sure the wife and kid will ride the
subway around while I’m at work: or just sit at hotel. After I’m done working,
we will do the subway thing. Probably just take a cab to and from airport so we
don’t have to haul luggage around. If we do relocate hotels Friday, will
probably have the wife haul the bags to the new place while I’m at work.

clarification - it shows you have to have some collusion on the seller’s part

So did the first seller leave the date blank on the signature line so it
would appear you just bought it from him? (Otherwise they could see months
had passed.)

2021-04-04 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
In Florida, an “open title” is a title held by the seller in the previous
owner’s name. In other words, I buy a car from you but I never sign the title
and register the car. Theoretically, it’s illegal, as most states (like
Florida) require you to title and register a car within 30 days of purchase.
They won’t come after you, as they have no idea you’ve done it since there’s no
record of the sale, but when/if you go to title/register the car if your name
would come up as the buyer you would get dinged.

The 99 E320 4Matic had an open title. The guy I bought it from had bought it
several months before from the original owner. He never registered it or
insured it (I assume) as he hadn’t been driving it. When I titled it the DMV
“saw” that it was a purchase from the original owner to me. The flipper I
bought it from never played into the transaction. As far as the state knows I
bought it from the first owner and was titling it immediately following the
purchase.

yeah right?  The 211s are nice cars but I'm not sure if they are worth
the bother with all the complex systems that can go bad

I was thinking about the 210 v. 211.  The 210 is OK, quite competent,
but still a 25yo design.  the 211 is much more refined to where I'm not
sure how any newer model could be much better, and would be even more
complicated.

722.9 the TCM is up in the trans as part of the conductor plate, not a
stand-alone component.  A whole new unit is like $900 and needs to be
programmed to the car which is doable I guess with the STAR clone. or
pay the stealer.  I have seen refurbs  or used supposedly paired for
like $300.  Some places will rebuild the conductor plate for $200-300
but that is just the solenoid connections not the TCM.  I might need to
go that route if fixing the brake accumulator doesn't work.

Your posts are reinforcing more and more my feeling that I should stick with

[MBZ] Well poo $900E500

2021-03-31 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
I took off the transmission connector plug today and cleaned it, it was oily
which made me think it was goobered up enough that the TCM was not talking to
the rest of the nannies. But alas it was not to be. Was still in limp mode In
a short drive after a good cleaning and clearing the codes.

It is perplexing why it is an intermittent fault. There was also a code for a
solenoid related to the brake. The car is also throwing a code for the SBC
accumulator so I’m wondering if that might be making the TCM act up. I need to
call the stealer to see if that would be covered under the SBC warranty. If so
I can get that fixed by them, if not I’ll buy the $75 part and fix it myself.

I’m not wanting to tear into the trans yet although it’s not a big deal. Even
if I get it sorted I should change the fluid/filter anyway I suppose
