What is the expense/risk? Higher wattage bulbs don't last as long?

Thanks,

Philips X-Treme Power H4

Osram Night Breaker H4

Both I think use the concept of reflecting infrared lighwaves back to

I'll note this is fairly new to car bulbs but is has been used in
Philips 90W IR outdoor bulbs for awhile now.

Osram also makes a Hyper H4 which is 70/65w versus the 60/55w
normally found. In my reading the Hyper bulbs
get the nod for the brightest bulb, but at the expense/risk of
running higher wattage. Otherwise apparently the Philips are
the brightest H4 bulbs at the moment using normal wattage.

Do the HID bulbs last SUPER long? That would justify the price, in

Yes regular tungsten based bulbs are rated in 100 of hours using a
standardized test procedure.
HID bulbs are rated in thousands of hours, thus for example my burned
out bulb is the original one used in a
car which had day time running headlamps for a 10 year period. They
speak of the bulb life as the life of the car
we mercedes owners know that means heh? 7 years or something...

I note that on the island here I always see Smart cars running with
burn out headlamps since they are DRL and use H7 high intensity bulbs

a low hundreds of hours rating and of course replacement of the bulb

they produce less light

Depending on what you have for lamps/lens the higher wattage bulbs
could melt things because of higher heat.
Normally this is not a problem for mercedes assembles that are not
USA specific.

You are running 20% higher wattage thru the wires, normally this is
not a problem for mercedes, but your milage may vary depending on
the year. This might require installing relays and running extra
wiring, likely I would do that for my w123 since the wiring there is
technically marginal for current flow. But technically it's not
needed to be done.

now if you run 100W bulbs the two issues above become much higher/
riskier

[MBZ] xenon bulbs burned purple...

2007-11-06 Thread John M McIntosh
Sure work on the trunk and rear seats, and the front of the sedan
feels wanted...

On the way home this morning, when I walk around the car to close the
gate. Gee the driver's side xenon lamp is
PURPLE, not blue, PURPLE... Wife takes car out at lunch, comes back
and no light on driver side.

Sigh.

Fortunately earlier this summer I had picked up a busted xenon
headlamp set on ebay and determined the xenon ballests, ignitor pairs
and two bulbs were
fine. I hadn't bothered to swap the bulbs, so drag that out of
storage, try one. Mmm blue, versus the passenger side which is more
warmer.
Apparently as the bulbs age they tend to go warmer in color, less
blue. Swap in the other bulb, both blue. Ah likely both bulbs coming
from a
florida car have seen little use. Unlike the original bulbs which
were from a Canadian car thus daylight running lamps and always on.

Well at least I didn't have to shell out $100 for a bulb, or
disassemble a headlamp to replace something.

I'm blinded by camera flashes (xenon strobes) as well.

Beam pattern is secondary, unless they are the old single beam type,
where they are indeed high beam only.

The single beam types are of course low beam only. My '01's original low
beam only lamps were updated to bi-xenons which requires a replacement of the
entire lamp assembly at some cost but has proven to be money well spent.

Your problems with these oncoming lights compels me to ask if you have been
examined for early cataracts.

Re: [MBZ] Xenon

Cataracts cause white fog glare, the Xenon lamps cause me to close my
eyes in pain. It's hard to describe -- they are so bright they cause
afterimage spots in the daytime for me. And for a young (25 years
old) friend, also all three of my brothers.

I do see bee violet as pale yellow, though -- bright spots on certain
flowers -- so I suspect people who see more of the blue end of the
spectrum than normal are blinded by those damned lights.

Note that I see VERY bright purple/blue glare off axis from them, not
white. At night I have to close my eyes, or at least squint, it's too
painful to keep then open when a car with xenons goes past the other
way. And believe me, I CAN tell -- I can spot a car with HID
headlights more than a mile away. Aircraft landing lights aren't as
bright!

[MBZ] Xenon tales

2005-10-17 Thread RELNGSON
The HID's take a few seconds to come up to full brightness. Mercedes
accommodates this delay by using them for the low beams and using
standard xenon's for the high beams and the HID's stay on when you switch
to high beams

The earlier low-beam-only Xenons use an 55W H-7 bulb for high beam with a
separate reflector and lens. MY '01 C320 came with the low-only xenons which I
converted to Bi-Xenon (complete replacement of the light units and huge
improvement $$$) and the H-7 high beam is retained, presumably for high beam
flashing
which Xenons cannot do. I replaced the stock 55W H-7 with 70W bulbs which made
a noticeable difference. I also tried a pair of 55W SilverStars and removed
them since the 70W bulbs were superior.

I've 65w H7 osram bulbs in my 500SEL. Are those really 70w or 65w?
The 65w H7 osrams are actually h9 bulbs on h7 base.

Very bright, h9 was going to be best lighting, then xenon came along.

Good point about flashing, I wonder what I could do to provide that
feature. Normally on the H4 setup that

lights up both the high and low part of the H4.
