What really does these in quickly is having a key chain with a bunch of crap hanging on it or a lot of keys. The weight of the items on the keychain buts stress on the lock and can cause it to fail. My youngest goes around with a lanyard for a keychain with all sorts of other junk on it. If he wasn’t driving a W210 with a SmartKey I would be all over him about it. -D > On May 4, 2018, at 11:44 PM, Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes >wrote: > > Thanks everybody. Well, "white lithium" grease will guarantee that it will be bad. that stuff hardens and cakes like dried clay. Use the sander trick and put in a new cyl. Friends don't let friends drive toadas OR use "white lithium" "grease" Synthetic with Molybdenum is the way to go. Molykote BR2 if ya want a brand. The M1 15w-50 of grease. Re: [MBZ] e420 ignition lock Frozen
Sounds like time to order a new tumbler. Wiggling and jiggling may get it to turn one more time, be ready with a set of 2mm pins (a bicycle spoke makes a good tool) to insert (grind angles on tips) so you can pull the tumbler. Extreme method is to vibrate the key with a sander while twisting to get the pins to release and turn the tumbler one more time... - Max Charleston SC On Fri, May 4, 2018 at 4:27 PM, Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes < mercedes@okiebenz.com> wrote: > Nanny says she cannot turn the key in the lock of the e420. Does that mean it can be removed but just will not turn the lock? I assume you have tried moving the steering wheel one way or the other? Do you have any other keys for the car? Maybe try a different key? Might spray some sort of penetrating oil down into it if key is removable. If sticky, I don't think I would have used grease. If it dries, it will be worse. Others will be along to advise that all is lost and the car is now worth only a pittance. Re: [MBZ] e420 ignition lock Frozen
Yup. You’ve probably got a bad lock cylinder. Best to do a Wilton on it with the vibratory sander and see if you can free it up for the removal. A new cylinder with key matched to your VIN is under $100 from the dealer. -D > On May 4, 2018, at 4:27 PM, Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes >wrote: > > Nanny says she cannot turn the key in the lock of the e420.
